Re-posted from Memnoch's thread on sarcasm.

Regarding sarcasm and personal attacks, I think the supreme authority for christians should be god, yes? Well, get a load of this:

from Job chapters 38, 39 (And remember Job was very ill, and down-and-out at the time. Furthermore, he had been placed in that position by god's permission and had been trying to defend both himself and GOD from the accusations of his 'comforters'.)

And YHVH (god, Jehovah) proceeded to answer Job out of the windstorm and say:
"Who is this that is obscuring counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins, please, like an able-bodied man, and let me question you and you inform me.
"Where did you happen to be when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you do know understanding...... (vss 1-4)
"Was it from your days onward that you commanded the morning? Did you cause the dawn to know its place?...... (vs 12)
"Have the gates of death been uncovered to you....? (vs 17)
"Have you intelligently considered the broad spaces of the earth? Tell, if you have come to know it all....... (vs 18)
Have you come to know because at that time you were being born and because in number your day are many? (vs21)
"Have you come to know the statutes of the heavens, or could you put its authority in the earth? (vs 33)
"Can you send forth lightnings so that they may go and say to you 'here we are!'? (vs 35)
"Is it owing to your understanding that the falcon soars up.....? Or is it at your order that an eagle flies upwards.....? (ch 39, vss 26, 27)

I could have quoted lots more, but I think the above makes the point. God himself is berating Job in terms of undiluted and highly effective sarcasm. At the end of it Job said "..I have become of little account.... I put my hand over my mouth..."

Anyway, if you are going to ban all sarcasm, you would be obliged to ban your god as well!

THINK ON IT!

Interesting article, F. And how is this relevant to what I posted? I don't see a connection. I stated what our forum guidelines were and requested that when posting an opinion or a rebuttal you treat the other person with respect, without sarcasm which demeans them. So what's all this Christianity stuff got to do with that?

Memnoch - if it is ok for GOD to attack Job with great sarcasm and vigour, then surely it is ok for us mere mortals to use sarcasm too? I thought the point was obvious.... sorry if it seemed obcsure! Hope I have now clarified?

F, please don't treat me like an idiot here. You know as well as I do that you are having a go at me. This is the very thing that I am talking about. If you didn't agree with my point, then say so. DON'T use sarcasm to make me feel like an idiot, please. I've always had a lot of respect for you as a person, and I'm disappointed in you with this as I feel it's out of character. I expected you to be more mature than this. This is the reaction I would expect from a 10 year old who's been told they can't throw vegies at their younger sister.

And you felt the need to post it twice, so I would see it not once, but twice?

Huh? Memnoch - I was so NOT being sarcastic! My apologies if it felt that way to you. I really did NOT intend you to feel like an idiot. Nor am I 'having a go' at you. No, I don't agree with your point on sarcasm, and that was what my post was meant to make plain - not a dig, just an 'illustrated' comment to show my position on this.
I posted it twice because I felt it may be lost in your thread, and I wanted to catch the interest of people who may not read your thread. This had nothing at all to do with you personally Memnoch. Again, you have my apology, even though I did not intentionally aim to cause offence. OK? You are the last person I would want to offend. I like you a lot.

Fair enough, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as I've known you for a long time, F, but this is what set me off:

THINK ON IT!

It's this EXACT response that I am not happy about - it's sarcasm used to belittle others (intentionally or unintentionally). Everytime I enter this forum I feel like I have to put my flak helmet on, and I don't like entering a forum feeling like that, let alone one here on Ironworks.

Uh..... Memnoch. What the blazes is sarcastic about that comment? It is not sarcastic - it is true! And what is belittling about it? I truly don't see where you are coming from here.

F, this is going to turn into a futile and circular discussion very quickly. Let me explain to you, to try and help you understand why I'm not happy about it. I post a thread asking people to ease up on the sarcasm as it can be construed as belittling people. I don't expect people to agree with me, but I do expect them to comply with my wishes. You don't agree with me, that's totally fine. But rather than saying so (like Silver Cheetah did) you post a long passage quoted from the BIBLE ending with this:

"Anyway, if you are going to ban all sarcasm, you would be obliged to ban your god as well!
THINK ON IT! "

Ban my God? If this wasn't sarcasm, was I meant to take it literally? Or was it a figure of speech meant to say "Gee, Memnoch, I think your viewpoint and your rule is so ridiculous, it would be like you trying to ban God. What a dumb idea!" I'm pretty sure that's what the rolling eyes mean, because that's what they mean in real life.

We can disagree about this till the cows come home, but at the end of the day rules are rules. They are there to protect ALL of us. I've given you the courtesy of an explanation, which is more than most moderators would give, because I respect you and want you to understand, but I've really said far, far too much on this issue already. I shouldn't have to repeat myself as much on one issue as I have had to tonight. You don't have to like the rules, but please abide by them. Fair enough?

Mem, you are putting words into my mouth that I never said nor intended!
BTW, the rolling eyes was the dizzy one (indicating 'huh? I don't get it'), NOT the sarcastic one (indicating 'I'm being sarcastic')
Anyway, I've sent you a PM, ok?

Edit: Oops! Wrong post, wrong smilie! Yes, that WAS the sarcastic one that you quoted! But it wasn't meant nastily! Honest! Just to show that I thought it was a bit silly to view sarcasm as a bad thing since even god used it.

F, we're going in circles with this. I've replied to your PM, let's take it from there as we're just repeating ourselves and wasting time here. It's 2:48 am and I need to get up in 4 hours. THIS is what this forum is doing to me.
