A link to a story might make this a bit more clear.

what better way to kill an insurgency than to show that there are no hard feelings and that they can still have the rights of people? They're not hiring them as thugs, they're hiring them for real work in hopes that they can get a peaceful solution to work.

Ultimately, can you really preclude all former members of a political party from helping out? I would suspect that not every Baath party member was pro-Saddam, except when he was present of course.

Linky?

Saddam WAS the Baath party, if you wanted to be in, you had to crawl up his ass. If they are really gonna do this, every soldier that died during this war, died for nothing.

HELLOOOOOO??? did the post say anything about putting the Baath party back into power? NO!!! it said that they were being hired. or johny, if they never get to work again, which do you prefer:

1) line them up and shoot them, heck they deserve it. screw the fact that the insurection will only get worse if we dont offer clemency

2) let em starve. families too. people who were wrong cant ever come back and shouldnt deserve to earn money for themselves or their families.

We're not talking about putting the baathists in charge, we're talking about letting them have a JOB and feed their family.

Well for example, we already know that former Saddam army officers are now being re-hired.

In Saddam's time, you could NOT be an officer without putting in EXTRA duties for the Baath party and having your loyalty 'tested'.

We are not talking about rank-and-file card carrying members of the regime who carried a card in order to work, we are talking about those judged loyal by the actions - not just by their word.

[/QUOTE]Then why didn't you hire Hermann Goering for a job so he could feed his family ? Or Adolf Eichman ? Or Rudolph Hess ?

You're hiring them to do what ? To take important places in society ? Like being in control of the police ? The army ? the new government perhaps ? well guess what smartypants, that IS putting them back in charge. Unless the US wants to stay in Iraq permanently of course.
