This is exactly what i expected to happen. The Iraqi's will never accept a government appointed by the US.

I'm just pissed off the only security she recieved were three barely trained relatives with second-hand AKs. They escorted her to work the same way at the same time evreyday. A freaking sitting duck in a shooting gallery.

No bodyguard could have prevented her death i'm afraid. Apparently they didn't just shoot at her, they launched grenades at her as well. I guess they wanted to make sure she had no chance of survival.

I would be amongst the first to champion women's rights in any country - but in Iraq the appointment of a women to such a position marked a cultural revolution in a country that simply was not ready for it. Ms al-Hashimi's appointment had far more to do with fending off criticism from liberals in Washington than it had in serving Iraqi interests. Bear in mind that it took thiry years of (often violent) campaigning in the UK just to get women the vote - never mind the right to sit in parliament. Iraqi reform requires a soft approach too - or you risk alienation. I'm not saying that they should wait 30 years - but a more measured timescale would have been more appropriate. I am betting that after the first real elections, we won't see a single female elected at all - and probably won't see one in government for at least another ten years after. |
