BG2 and ToB are my only real RPGs on my PC. BG2 got me into the whole world of RPGs and is the best game I have ever played of any format. I cannot say a bad thing about it (ok, ok, maybe improved pathfinding bugs me a bit...OK, A LOT!... anyway I digress...).
Anyway, now, Thanks to BG2, i love RPGs and want to get another. I know NWN is comiung out soon but the latest from the website is sometime late summer 2002. I CANNOT WAIT THAT LONG!!!. sorry. I want advice, should I get;
BG1 - seems logical after loving BG2,
Diablo 2 - I hear good things but it is rarely talked about here,
Icewind Dale - plus heart of winter,
Wizadry 8 - I hear good things about this too but i had never even heard of it until joining up at Ironworks.
These are just my thoughts. Please tell me which of these RPGs you have enjoyed. Make your own suggestions of others too.

Actually, I would like to suggest a whole other then those. Planescape: Torment!
It has alot in common with BG2, has pretty good graphics, and have a pretty good story. Ofcourse, it aint as good as BG2, but it's still one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
But if you want one from that list, I'd say BG1. I havent played it myself, not Wizardry 8, but I have played Diablo 2 and IWD+HoW, and non of them are as good as BG2. But I guess BG1 should be pretty like.

Just like you I started ny RPG addiction with BG2, and had to try and find an adequate replacement after I finished it. So I oredered BG1 and have loved it just as much, maybe even more. It doesn't the NPC interaction that BG2 had, but there is some. Plus there's tons of cool NPC's to choose from. Give it a try!

I would stay away from D2 if you love the party interaction, unless you plan to spend most of your time playing multi. .
After I played BG, I could just never get into prowling dungeons all the time with a solo character again. Now don't get me wrong, with BG2's diversity, it is great to play through all kinds of ways, including taking shots at solo power play. But at least BG2 offers the diversity

I second this strongly. BG1 is nowhere near the game BG2 is, and Diablo isn't a CRPG, at all: it's an action game that was heavily marketed as a CRPG, to try and expand its sales. But PS:T is a very fine CRPG, and incredibly cheap, now.

Morrowind's coming out, soon, as well.

PST = Good game with far far too much chat. If you prefer dialogue then go for it.
You'll love BG1, then add TotSC add on and then if you like the unnoficial add on Dark Side of the Sword Coast (DSotSC).

Although it predates BG2 and the pathfinding isn't as good (it can be tweaked) it's still a mighty good game. Without BG1 there would be no BG2, that must tell you something.

My suggestions:

BG1 + ToSC (the add-on) - you should be able to find copies of the 2 bundled together.

IWD+HoW - a nice game, not as deep as BG/BG2. Combat can get quite intensive at times tho'. Not much interaction with NPCs, no interaction b/w party members (which you create yourself). If I rated BG2 as 5/5 stars, IWD+HoW would rate 3 1/2 - 4.

D2 - Extremely combat intensive, none of the other traditional role play elements in it. You can't really interact with NPCs (very limited), endless combat, mucho mouse clicking. More of an action game set in RPG setting.

Planescape Torment - now there's an interesting RPG! If you like the non-combat portions of BG2, solving puzzles and quests by using brains rather than swords, a deep & intriguing storyline, colourful party members, this is for you. Get it, you won't regret it!

Fallout 2 - another good RPG but set in a post-apocalyptic future. Quite engaging & I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wiz 8 - can't vouch for it, as it's not sold through the traditional channels.

The Fallout Games are very good, and Planescape Torment has the best sotry in a D&D computer game.

Right now I am playing Dungeon Siege, it is very good.

Thanks for all your advice ppl! Right now I am going to plunge into BG1 but after all the good things I have heard about PS:T I'll probably buy that soon.

Thanks!

PS-we don't have dungeon siege over this side of the pond yet, lucky canadians!
