As a sort of continuation of my System Shock thread - here is another RPG which I have contemplated and resisted buying on more than one ocassion mostly because I've already got so much stuff I haven't played yet.

So tell me what you all think of Arx Fatalis! The reviews I have read of it fascinate me with its mouse driven runic system and the dungeon screenshots positively gleam and beg to be explored.

Also, I can't get out of my head the quote I read on the front of the box when I saw it at a local video game rental store. "The natural successor to Ultima Underworld". This is a big statement and how so much I'd dearly like a game that could live up to it! Could it possibly have the interactive depth of that brilliant game? Does it feature good music and is it immersive? I still have many questiosn about it.

Thus, I'd be very interested in hearing the opinions of players of both games to perhaps destroy any illusions I might have of it being the Ultima Underworld 3 that I've always dreamt of. *drool*

I bought it when it came out and played it for a while, but never got around to finishing it.

Then I got my new computer, and re-installed it to try it with better quality.

There's one problem, I get no voices. I installed the patch but it didn't fix it. I sent their customer support an email describing my problem, and as they requested I even sent in my dxdiag.txt. They never replied.

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy with the latest drivers... I wouldn't bother with a game from a company that can't handle a sound blaster card, and has no custommer support...

Thanks for that Nanobyte, but I'm on dial-up, so that's not really feasible unless I get a broadbanded friend to get it for me.

I can hire it fairly cheaply to test it if I want to, I was just more keen for some fellow Ironworkers personal game experiences like Luvian sent.

Strange that you had so many problems with the customer support Luvian - did you try the forums support at the official site? http://forum.jowood.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=67
The site's quite a feast for the senses...
I think I'll be jotting the game down for sure on my 'to play soon' list.

Does anyone know if it's been released in Europe? I've tried the demo and it seems to be a pretty decent game. Kind of like the Ultima Underworld series.

Err, well that's what I said. Its similarities to Ultima Underworld is what has attracted me to it, definitely. Apparently its automap features are a little poor however, whereas they were always a brilliant part of Ultima Underworld 1&2. But if Arx Fatalis is half the game these were, it will be worth playing indeed.

Check the official forum (link already provided) for release date information.
But surely it was released in Europe.

I bought it a couple'a weeks ago (but haven't really gotten around to playing it yet), so yeah, it's released in Europe.

Blah, I wrote a post and then I got a Ironworks Timeout error...

I said I looked at the forum, but there was nothing about my problem. There is another guy that has the same card, and he's having some sound problem too, he got no help from either the forum or the email support.

The last time they helped someone on the forum was in 2003.

'fore playing some games, I have to alter the hardware acceleration settings for me soundcard (control panel>sounds and multimedia or sound and audio devices or... something>find somewhere where there's a dropdown menu where you can change what soundcard to use'n click the 'advanced' button near it... ... oh, what lovely instructions theese be). I try'n switch it from full till none (or vica versa) if something's not working right.

I would be cautious....confined to underground would do my head in. I love the outdoors in an RPG. Anyway, that seems to be quite a detailed review which may help your decision.
