I loved FFVII and FFVIII but is FFX worth buying a PS2 for ?

I am already considering buying a PS2 because it has Tekken 4 and it plays DVD.

I haven't played FFX, but I bought FFIX. I was extremely disappointed. It was pretty bad in my opinion. Everything that was good about Final Fantasy has been removed from the game over the years.

Warhammer if you like FFVII and FFVIII then FFX is a must have! Trust me I bought a PS2 cause of FFX.
One thing you do have to take in consideration however, is that you can take everything you know up to about FF and trash it. The combat system, leveling up system and just about everything else you can mention has been redone. Don't let this dishearten you though. 99% of the people I know who have played FFVIII totally hate it. The problem is that everyone got used to FFVII and were probably expecting the sequels to have the same battle system, materia, etc etc. Myself, I like new things. They might not always be better, but for FF I'll adapt to anything and spend many hours on it before giving it a bad name. After all, if you're an FF fan, you know that FF is the end of the line in games (well in my opinion anyway). Once you finish an FF game, everything else seems shallow and just doesn't have the same effect.
Now I'm not sure how much you like FFVIII but when I first completed FFVII, I thought there was no way anything could ever impress me as much as that game had. Then came FFVIII. I took it home and didn't know what to expect, but was overwhelmed with the thought that I now owned it! From the first moment the game captivated me. Sure, things were different and there was a LOT to learn, but this only added to the enjoyment and overall experience of the game. Also the FMV's had gotten a lot better and that is something I really love in a game. It's always good to have a few hours of difficult gameplay pay off with a great cut scene you can kick back and relax to even if for a moment. Then came the completion of FFVIII (SPOILER: after two hours of final battle which I was sure I'd never win after the first ten minutes END OF SPOILER) and nothing could prepare me for the ending movie. Call it stupid or what you will but I found it to be one of the most satisfying experiences I had ever had.
From that moment on, FFVIII was on top of the list for me.

Then there was FFIX. Different once more, meaning that all my work had to begin from scratch. Who cares though! This is a game I wait for and get the chance to experience once in a few years. I gave it my all. Completed it and was once again immensely impressed with it. I'll leave FFIX here though as you didn't mention whether you played it so I do not wish to reveal too much.

Now! FFX!!! DAMN! If you have a PS2 and you aren't into these kind of games then personally speaking, you are missing out the best thing money can buy in the video game world. Gameplay wise and whole combat menu, leveling up etc etc is KICK ASS! FMV's, there's not even a chance that I can begin to describe how good the FMV's are in this game. At many times it's a case of where does the FMV begin and the game end? Not to overdo it though as the FMV is a huge different to what you actually see when you are in control but both are just as impressing. One thing I also loved was the fact that the characters now speak. As if the game could not get any better without this! All up, the best FF EVER but once again speaking out of my own opinion for it. Personally, if this game cost ten times what it does, there is still no way I'd let it go. Although I did not know that when I bought it, I do know it now.

So, if you end up purchasing a PS2, head over to your local video store and rent yourself a copy of it. I hope this does not let you down though. If you have finished FFVIII you will know that the journey isn't always as much fun, but when you reach your destination, you realise how worthy your efforts really were!

Well, I hope this kinda long post has helped you in some way to make a decision. I could seriously made it ten times longer but it's best keep it at a size you'd be happy to read (hopefully). When you do manage to get yourself a copy though, let me know what you think! I'm pretty sure that you will not be let down.

Geez Bokken thanks for the reply. It is a tradition in FF games that each one starts in a brand new world, with different charcters and even different rules for magic and special powers, so it's fine that FFX does the same.

K I'll put a PS2+FFX on my (30th) birthday wishlist, next month.

No doubt you'll love it!
As a side it's good that you're 30 (mature age) as I find that a lot of younger age groups do not like it for a certain reason. You'll know what I mean when you play/complete it.
Get ready for a lot of sleepless nights!!!

not necessarily.... i love the ff series... and ffx in ps2 is totally superb compared to the previous series... and i m avid ff fan so it does not matter how much the battle/fighting engine has changed, i just love the story and the fmv, and you just have to adapt to the new fighting/battle system.... unless u find problems in adapting....
for me, i buy the ps2 just to play ffx and gran turismo 3... evennow as we speak i m still replaying my ffx....
so its worth to buy ffx to play... but if u don't like ffx, it is still a good investment to buy ps2, as there are so many other games with good graphics waiting for u to play....

Not necessarily? Which part are you referring to there?

FFX was a pretty solid game, but PLEASE don't consider getting a PS2 for Tekken 4. I just rented that game and it's pretty horrible when compared to Tekken 3, or Tekken 4 in the arcade. And anyway, Soul Calibur 2 is out for the Arcade, so who needs Tekken?

As for FFX, it's a good game, but I think 7 & 3(SNES) were better. But that's just my opinion, and Bokken, i disagree with you about the Leveling etc. "kicking ass". They should have stuck with the basics, and the whole Giant chart thing gets annoying after a while. I think that if you liked some of the other games you should be at least *satisfied* with FFX. The story was kind of, well, boring (this may be an age thing) but i dunno. The game is also EXTREMELY EASY, or at least I thought it was, considering I died only once. But if you get a PS2, and want a good RPG, get Kingdom hearts, the battle engine rocks on that game. AND IT HAS ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM PREVIOUS FF GAMES!!

The real drawcard for me in FFX is how tight the combat system is. I wasn't fond of the spheregrid for leveling up, but short of real-time combat I thought the combat in FFX was excellant. Of course if your a longtime follower of FF games, you'll probably like the characters and the story even though both are kind of predictable.
