Anyone know the secret of making this stupid game stable? I had heard about the CTD's but geez this is ridiculous, I can't even create a character and save it because Im crashing all the time

I have it patched up to the latest 1820 patch level (have tribunal and bloodmoon installed)

Any help would be appreciated.

Lets get some details on your system Mr Magik
(cpu, motherboard, video card, etc...)

Also, are you running any background programs such as viruscan, instant messenging program, etc...?

CTD is very common in this game. everybody seems to have that problems.

Like Too Darkpark said maybe you can list your system.

I have one like every three days of playing...not too bad but really irritating when you just did alot and forgot to save...your crashes seem a bit too frequent for it to be normal!

What does the patch do ? I haven't patched my game, and i hardly ever crash. There's always the occasional CTD, but that's a thing you have to live with when playing Morrowind. It shouldn't crash that often, give it a try without the patch.

actually, the latest patch is aimed mostly at Bloodmoon and does little to fix anything other than a few story line problems in the main morrowind game.

one thing that i do know which will cause a CTD is little memory. evidentally, morrowind has a memory leak and sooner or later crashes. that's what remember reading on the elderscrolls.com forum.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this....work is so inconvenient.

My system is as follows

P4 3.0Ghz
1GB Dual Dual Channel Ram
Video is GeForce 6800 GT OC by BFG
about half a terabyte of disk storage
MB Is a Gigabyte KNXP Platinum or premium

I have only 14 processes running on the system...I have pared down and shut down everything on this system that isn't absolutely essential for XP to run...I wanted this rig to really rock...I have Doom 3 running at 62FPS with all the bells and whistles and 16x anti-aliasing. Im not running anything unnecessary during game execution.

I have fairly new if not bleeding edge video drivers for the 6800
Im suspecting this might be sound card related...I think when I get home Im going to turnoff the music and see what happens.

Ummm Crap...Im at work at the moment..will fill in more stats when I get home in a couple of hours.

Thanks Seraph, and I think I solved my major crash to desktop problem. I was using the AC97 sound system integrated on the motherboard....I turned this off and installed an Audigy2 sound card, and now I run for quite a while before the CTD. ....at least I can play....as long as I remember to save often.

That's something you have to get yourself used to. Don't forget that Morrowind has a habit of crashing randomly, i hit the quicksave button every five minutes, just in case.
