I have a Faerie Mage who just leveled to 13. The best fire spell she has is Fireball. Best offensive spell so far. She is 100 in Wizardry (with the 25% bonus, I guess 80 without) and 77 in Fire realm. Her powercast is about 38. Is there a level limitation here to get better spells? I know, I can look it up. Seems weird, though. As if they deliberately limited the mage.
I now have the Cane of Corpus and am seriously thinking of making her a Ninja to use it. Of course, that will set her magic back 5 levs. But she could kick! She does pretty good damage with Fireball, but mana runs out quick with a 20-30 damage attack per round. After the next lev she will have 50 in senses, which will may her ready for Ninja. Is it worth it? She's one of the better slingers, oddly enough. Using Sprite Dagger and Wand of Static for melee (wand skill around 30). Better damage than the Liz Priest (who still uses a bullwhip). Armor? I don't think there is much available til much later. Some robe thing. (Dual class to a faerie Samarai? Don't think so! It might be the worst)

yeah, there's a big gap for the fire college in the mage book until lvl 6 (firestorm?), which you would get at lvl 14.
usually, though, the gap shows up around the time i take on areas with higher fire resistant creatures, like the mountain wilderness (scorchers) and the rift (rapax), so it's not a big loss. usually i have terrible success with spontaneous character class switches (ie where i havent planned for it). but in this case, i think it would depend on what the rest of the party composition is. who's the faerie mage got for friends? |

I have a faerie mage in my current party (levels 22-24), and she has more than a hundred points in each of the magic realms, so mana is'nt a too big issue. The spells I usually use with her are: of course the buffs: enchanted blade, missile shield, X-ray, fireball (I found that nuclear blast is rarely better, and costs much more mana), asphyxiation (I think that this spell is just great since there are'nt too many monsters with high air resistance, and it affects everyone in sight), set and return to portal at ferro (the priest has it somewhere else), whipping rocks (against large masses, with a powercast in the 90-s it deals 30-40 damage to every one of them at level 7), and sometimes crush against solitary enemies, and of course water spells in rapax areas and against fire resistant monsters. I found the mage to be very powerful later on, and the faster mana regeneration makes the faerie a very good choice, the only thing to be careful about is the low amount of hits (I hate nessie's first turn earthquake). So I would recommend keeping the character as a faerie, though that may depend on what else you have in your party (spell book overlaps).

Sultan, FYI
Current party: Human Lord Female Gnome Rouge Female Hobbit Bard Female Lizardman Priest Male Human Psionic Female Faerie Mage Female (and RFS for now) The Psi and Mage are starting to do some interesting damage, I need to add dex and speed to Priest but he's a good protector. Never took a Mage or Psionicist all the way up. This party is not the strongest but I wanted to try one with more caster power. I almost always avoid Fighters. I guess they are not interesting to me, though they sure can melee. dplax: Yah, that first Earthquake from old Ness takes alot of the wind from your sails, or whatever the thing is underwater, before you have defenses up. And when she follows that by another or Ironskin, it's a wee bit difficult. [ 10-03-2003, 07:05 PM: Message edited by: Ziggurat ]

At level 13, you surely have iceball. IIRC this one does a bit more damage than fireball. And you have whipping rocks, magic missiles, noxious fumes... attack spells in nearly every realm.
I wouldn't switch to ninja. You'd start a different scool of magic, so you will never get high level mage spells, and never get usable alchemist spells except heal. And you probably have low fighting stats, so you'd miss a lot, and don't do much damage. Armor? Search the items for the z(something) plate from Antone. Can be used even with a mage. Nessie? You have a bard, so heal all every round isn't a problem. And she is vulnerable to high level mental spells, if melee doesn't work. |

In addition to agreeing with the above, the Mage also has some excellent Level 6 Spells, namely Blizzard and Banish, which are very effective through the end of the game when the enemies are close together (for Blizzard) or happen to be of the right type (for Banish, which happens a lot). You have a Priest, also, so you can double up on Banish (if he or she has, or will have, Powercast).
I usually go for damaging enemies, rather than a chance to kill a few outright so never use Asphyxiation (or Quicksand, Death Cloud, Death Wish, etc) since the damage spells are not assisted in any way by the presence of fewer enemies. Instead it is better to engage two groups at once, when possible, so your damage spells (when using that method to kill) are even more effective (i.e. increase, rather than decrease the number of enemies). Like dplax, I have never been that impressed with the Nuclear Blast Spell, but just in this game. When there are lots of enemies and Fire resistance is not "out the roof" it is fine. I rarely find use for Fire Realm Spells late in this game (maybe 10% of the fights), as opposed to finding them very effective (Without Nuclear Blast, Prismic Fire, Firestorm, or Lightning yet) for the first 60% of the game. Boiling Blood remains useful through the crossover period and for occasional use throughout the rest of the game. [ 10-06-2003, 04:46 PM: Message edited by: EEWorzelle ] |

Thanks, all! I just got Iceball from the Swamp. It wasn't available earlier. I didn't know a Faerie Mage could use the Zynaryx Plate. Will have to get the ingredients for Antone. I'm keeping the Mage for now, and will be focusing more on the non-fire realms.

apologies if this is late in response (was away for the long weekend). i would say that with the party composition you currently have, keep her a mage. this appears to be in line with all the other great advice above. good luck and let us know how you go.

Now if I can only find a venom crab drop for the big Z armor for the Mage. I went back to the Monastery beach and camped out a few times, and again at the entrance to Arnika Road from the Monastery. Gave up after a while. Probably will have better luck for a v crab in Bayjiin or whatever. Guess it will have to wait. She is staying alive fine, though. We took out 9 Juggernauts and two weeds in open ground, no prob. Casted conjure elemental and hypnotic lure and many area spells including the Bard's paralysis thingie. I also do a Guardian for both the Psi and Mage just in case. It's usually paid off. They have less than 50 HP each and my formation has all three pure casters in the middle, with the 4 others on the flanks. I see potential here for the big battles ahead!
Edit: added the 2nd to last sentence. [ 10-07-2003, 05:50 PM: Message edited by: Ziggurat ]

there's a fixed encounter with 8 venom crabs in bayjin, so you should get a drop of one or three there with any luck.
i've had similar problems getting a shell from the monastary. but once, just once, i got venom crabs back at the original crash site. when i saw them from burz's, i ran and jumped off the broken rail into the wash that goes over the water fall. i was happy to take the damage in order to finish that quest! |
