Is it possible to start out as a mage/sorcerer and later be effective with a bow or light armor?

Since this is such a big game I don't want to make the wrong choice.

I am not going to pick a race dependant on class. That is just no fun. Powergaming never appealed to me. I just want to make sure the game is still fun and playable by mixing skills to use what you want.

I suggest you start with light armor even if you are a mage. unarmored combat sucks.

Major and minor skills are just those who improve faster and allow you to gain levels, but you can train ANY skill to the maximum (100, or the current value of the attribute governing that skill - ex. strength 79 => heavy armor max 79 until you gain strength by leveling).
So using bows is just a matter of training, no matter what class you choose. Maybe that's the fault of morrowind, you can be powerful at any skill, with no exception.

yes, you can. just put the skill that you think you'll use the most in major or minor skill. also, get a race that can give bonus to your magicka. plus get a sign that give bonus to magicka. why? you'll notice those bonus to magicka might help you greatly in letting you cast more and powerful spell. it also save you from the constant frustration when your magicka runs out too fst amd too early. believe me it will.

... just too bad any own enchanted item will never be as powerful as some legendary artifacts you can find scattered around. There is a maximum enchantment in objects, and it usually is far from enough to replicate the magnitude of enchantment of the aforementioned masterpieces.

Hmmm... at level 50 you are halfway to Lord Vivec. You SHOULD be that good. I guess the problem is in the quality of items...

it's not the quality of items. it's whether you can dodge vivec spell or not.
