Well met, uss. I'm speaking from my own experience here. I think each of the threads here comes with its own rules, which are usually found in the first post. Some of the threads don't seem to come with any rules -- what I do then is just step in and brew up a character, and join in the story.

I think what you can do is read some of the threads here. That should give you some idea of what to do around here.

BTW, would you like to join the experimental 'Hodge-Podge RPG' I started? Huh, pweeeease?

Just think of some imaginary person or creature with certain abilities (not too powerful, though), and think of what sort of personality you'd like him/her/it to have. Then imagine you're in a Hollywood show and that you're acting as this character/creature.

u pick a race then you basically u just roll for the stats such as strength, intelligence charisma, wisdom, dexterity. you get 3 rolls of a 6 sided die for each stat. then you pick what class u want your charachter to be, a fighter, mage, theif, etc. and last but not least you make up a background for the character.
FROM THE DAY HIS FATHER LEFT HIM AT THE AGE OF 13 TO FIGHT IN THE SECOND FORUM WAR OF DOMINANCE, TRAJHAN KNEW HE WANTED TO BE A SOLDIER. HE SPENT MOST OF HIS YOUTH PREPARING HIS BODY FOR THE RIGORS OF THE SOLDIER'S LIFE. HIS FATHER NEVER CAME BACK FROM THAT WASR, BUT TRAJHAN HAS ALWAYS HAD A FEELING HE WAS STILL ALIVE. HE AS MUCH A HE WANTS TO BE A SOLDIER TRAJHAN WANTS TO FIND PROOF OF HIS FATHER. ALIVE OR DEAD EITHER WAY. TRAJHAN JUST WANTS TO PUT HIS OWN SOUL TO REST.

something like that for example
hope that helped

There are two common types of game here. One is with actual DnD rules, where you roll up a character as you might in a normal rpg. In the other, which I personally find more interesting, you don't really follow any rules but common sense and simply try to write a good story, together with the other players.

In the latter case, characters can be generated really easy. You think of the class you want to play (most of the time, these games do use DnD type classes and spells), make a mental list of the things your character is or is not good at, take the time to come up with a basic history and, the hardest part, think of a name. Ready to go.

For example:

I want to play a paladin. Captured by drow as a child, Peter has spent his life working as a slave in the city of Whatever. All those years, only his quick mind and strong physique have kept him from being sacrificed or simply slain. Eventually, he escaped to the surface because of the poor quality of his chains and the lazy guards who thought he'd have accepted his destiny years ago, but were mistaken.
Once safely above the ground, Peter made it his mission to fight the drow as they raided villages for slaves, and ended up as a paladin in Keldorn's Order.

Now this character is rather straightforward, the muscular fighter type. Character traits would be his hatred for drow and not being able to swim, for example, balanced by a better sense of his location underground. You can add strange experiences if you like, for example, he might, after all those years below ground, fear the sun, and only go out at night (which is when the drow show their faces anyway) or stay indoors/in the shadows. Maybe he's had his arm broken by a mace so many times he runs at the sight of such a weapon. It could be that he had a dwarf for a best friend below grounds and knows all about them now.

Such characters ar really simple and quick to make, and you don't really have to write down anything.
