the programers put it there so she doesn't die in the first dungeon and she can get out and have that scene with irenicus where she gets taken away.

heh i got rid of imoen in the spellhold, sorry, but jan's much more advanced doing thievery, i hope i don't get any problems with that tho...

imoen is ace, you should keep her. shes also neutral so she works with any party, and apparently her evil dialogues are quite entertaining.
imoens belt is useless to the player, and goes away after irenicuses dungeon.

Heh, if you want a bit o fun at the start, let Imoen get taken down to 1 hp, she runs off, but her dialogue is pretty humerous (especially if shes taken out by a really weak enemy!)
