I bought Planescape Tormaent and so far it's a nice game

You become a mage by talking to ?mebbeth? in one of the houses in ragpickers square.
By getting out of the hive do you mean finding pharod? Or are you further on? |

Go to ragpickes square, and enter the "trash Warrens". (you'll need some junk) it'll be easy from there.
