Basically, the best class to solo is one which you enjoy playing most.
You should have completed the game with a party at least once, and from there can determine which class you enjoy most,

However, most people agree that a sorcerer is the easiest to solo with; but if you don't like or are not comfortable with magic...

with patience, any class can be soloed succesfully (imho)

Aye, you'll need a character that can do more than fight, so that means a support character of some kind. So mages to counter magical assaults and thieves to get past all the traps are usually the way to go, unless you pick up an NPC of that certain class just to bypass a certain area. Clerics are less important since there are good clerics everywhere you go. An interesting alternative would be a Barbarian or a Druid, since those are most likely to go off on their own and still provide an interesting experience. Paladins, fighters and rangers are rather simple, but an Inquisitor (paladin kit) has good dispel magic abilities so that might be a good choice.
If you want a powergame, pick something like a Kensai/Mage or Kensai/Thief, or a Mage/Sorceror. Those will blow through the game in no time. If you want to role-play, a full Thief or a Cleric might be interesting.

personaly, i think soloing is lame. i cant do it. not because i cant play, but i get bored. all you do is the same tactics, time and time again. there is not variety. i also come accross extrememly cool items, and can only use one or two at a time. i beat it ONCE soloing as a cavalier. i got halfway through chapter two with a sorceror, and was bored. i usually play with about four to five of my own characters, so i have room for an npc for the quests, then ditch them once i can do the quest. its fun, because then i can use the items i find, and not get too bored, because i will have mass-versatility.
i usually go with a paladin kit, a human fighter dualed to a thief at level 7, a sorceror, an archer, and a fighter dualed to a cleric at level 7. this makes an outstanding party in my opinion. and no, i dont roll stats for an hour with each character. i reroll a few times yes, but i dont get extremely powerful characters, no. am i the only one like this?!
