Is having a character repeat a task - like inspecting a chest - over and over and over again actually "training" them? Or do you "train" by using your skills in more constructive ways while pursuing the goals of the game?

To some extent, this is the personal choice of the player - but, is there any tangible difference in how the character develops? Personally, I find the repetitive action method far too tedious, but I am wondering if there are other drawbacks, as well?

I suppose that, if there were a concept of the characters aging, then one might find that endless inspections to gain lock-n-trap skills would cost you time. But, I don't get the sense that aging plays much of a role in Wiz8. Too bad.

i guess in general that's what it is. altho, personally, i find it cheap and boring.

for me, training is what you learn as you play the game. casting in battle trains the different spell schools, attacking with 2 weapons trains your dual wield, playing your bagpipes trains your music ability... and like dat.

You can try training stealth on a solo character that have " stealth " ability.A solo faerie ninja for example. Just go into defend mode with continuos combat. Your stealth skill will rise. Now with your stealth skill being high perferbably 100. You'll notice combat will become easy. The training part might be too tedious and boring at first. But the reward is good.

Perhaps, that is the basic question: Is the goal of training to make combat "easy" by repeatedly performing a mindless task, or is the goal to train your party as they move forward through their various quests and adventures?

Within the context of Wiz8 - this seems to be a personal choice of the player. For my part, I prefer to fight battles that I am just barely winning. No uber characters for me - unless they earn it the old-fashioned way.

I was just curious how other's in the forum think on this issue - I'm truly not being judgemental.

Quite literally my only "mindless repetative" training activity has been knock knock on the Arnika vault door, and only then to get a nice meaty Whipping Rocks attack. Other than that I prefer to do it all during the adventure but fighting everything and casting as many spells as possible.

I approach each encounter as a training opportunity (Duh!) for the Party. That means if monsters are not a real threat, I will "train" by using less powerful spell-casters, or powerful spells that don't currently allow high-level casting. I will also use the spell-casters as fighters and switch to alternative weapons at such times.

Besides maintaining a touch of suspense in the battles, it broadens the skill-base of the Party - especially with regard to Magick.

The only skill I find that I ever need to "train" is Lock Picking (or whatever it is called in this game). Most other skills go up on thier own quite quickly, especially if you are playing on expert level. But I hate having a treasure gatherer who can't even get to the dang treasure, or who gets a dart between the eyes when trying.

I never trained a skill. I only build up my characters by fighting every enemy who gets in my way or by solving quests. I don't have the patience f.e. to stand before a 8-tumbler-lock and cast knock knock dozends of times.

It's easy to win the game without training. So why should I do it ?

Training generally refers to the repetition of an action until a certain skill or set of skills is raised to a fairly high level.

I hate it. I tried it once with Knock-Knock on the vault and got bored after about +5 points in Earth realm. If I want to raise skills without doing it the "normal" way then I'll probably just go and use an editor. It saves time and gives the same result, though the only time I've done that wasn't for training but to give my party the Light Sword after trying for 2 days to get it.

Like Loudhy says, it's not even necessary to do it to win the game. In fact, it makes the game that much easier since you'll end up with skills beyond the power that the game expects of your characters' levels.

Yeah - I'm agreeing with what I'm reading. I don't understand why "training" is even desireable. I haven't done any (that I know of!) and, even so, my party rarely encouters a group that it cannot defeat. Stark contrast between the current situation (Lvls-18-22) and the beginning (Lvl 4-6). Had I been "training" to further increase the "power" of my characters, I'd be swatting at flies!!

In fact, I generally travel with 2 NPCs - just to moderate the rate at which I am gaining levels.

From what I read on these boards - I had thought I was in a minority, as many seem hell-bent on garnering all the XP they can possibly acquire.
