hey all
im thinking about making a 2 char party of a gadgeteer and some other sort of a ranged weapon wielding character (ranger or ninja turned into ranger probably) and...
i was wondering if anyone has tried using a dwarf for a gadgeteer.. they start -10 but the idea is just too perfect... i also am wondering what short range weapons would be best for him to use, however i will most likely be using good ammo and gadgets later in the game...
ive never built up a decent gadgeteer before so im relatively new to their style of play.. anybody have any suggestions?

Brianward,
I made a mook gadgeteer last game, and she worked out very well. Remember to make your gadgeteer a girl, gadgeteers suck down stamina like bards, and the only gear available early on that helps with this is female only. No experience with Dwarves though, you will want to hear from others on this.

There is an excellent guide for gadgeteers here:

I've just been running a Solo Gadgie, lot of fun but real tough.
I think your idea of a 2 char party with a Gadgie is a good one, and should be fun.
After trying just about every race I used a Lizzard for the starting Str and Dex, but resistances are low and very weak when attacked with magic. Hobbits are viable, and surprisingly I also found Fairie quite good if you bolster up the Vit at start-up.

Personally I find the Omnigun a complete waste of time and prefer to use either Bloodlust or Staff of Doom, both cursed, but I don't find the loss of ranged attack much of a loss.

Gadgies are pretty weak till late in the game when you get the good gadgets so you will need to focus on either a good melee or ranged attack, and the melee attack is MUCH stronger, and the gadgets themselves form your ranged attack anyway.

I found the essence of a good gadgie was to build up a mini-fighter. You will need a TON of Stamina, those gadgets use tremendous amounts of Stamina, plus carrying them around. You will find that you end up using a LOT of Stamina potions. In a multi char party you can have someone cast Stamina but in small parties thats just not viable.

Later in the game you will get the Negatair gadget and it is truly awesome, even works on some non air-breathers like Androids and Crabs and Insects.

I think the key to your game will be the choice of the second char.

I always had a Gadgeteer in my party. He can use Fang but there are not many other good weapons for him ( no curses allowed )

Two handed weapons were bad for me because (in my party) I trained his lockpicking skill too . So I always used a Thieves Buckler ( AC+1 Lockp +10, Speed +10) .

It's not easy to train a Gadgy in his main skills and in a close combat skill.

If youre going 2 man then pick a second man that is strong early on. By the time he reaches lvl 15 or so the omnigun will be pumping out death like theres no tomorrow with a variety of deadly gadgets to go with it . The gadgie suffers from only being able to use a lighning rod and port-o-potty to do any serious damage early game.

Ive never really seen the melee possibilities of gadgies, they will be just ok, a little inferior to bards, and the omnigun will shine later so i always use a modern weapon to raise skill.

I'm at a loss to understand how the Omnigun will be pumping out death at Lev 15 in a 2-man party. What ammo are you using, where are you replenishing it from, how are you getting enough for more than a few battles, and how are you carrying it?

Nog, a gadgie doesn't come with a portal, and with only one portal replenishing ammo isn't all easy. I'd say Mr Creosote foresees a true problem here.

I find normally with a one portal party a gadgie can last for ages without replenishing. Using gadgets 1/2 of the time and carrying top blue load of ammo i have normally been able to complete areas of the game without having to portal out and back. For info my last 2 man gadgie party was gadgie/priest with the priest multiing as a bishop after lvl 18. Both built strength first, priest piety second and gadgeteer vitality (lots of stamina and cc). Never needed eagle eye to hit and priest concentrates on buffing gadgie and bashing anything else on the head with his stun mace. Never had ammo problems, a couple of hundred lightning bolts is enough to see me through most areas with liberal use of gadgets
