I just got Wizardry 8, and i was wondering if identify is a skill or a spell?

if my memeory serve me correct Artifact skill is your identiry skill. you can raise the skill thru identirying item or thru level up.

As Kakero said, artifact skill is for identifying items. With your starting skill, you only can id simple items, but above a score of 15 things start going well.

In addition, there is an identify spell, available for priest and psionic cast types (priest, lord, valcury, psionic, monk, bishop)

Right click on all new objects before you try to cast the spell on them, it will make everyone try to use their Artifacts skill on it first. Really not much need to raise this at level ups if you always do this as it will go up very well on its own.

Also selling any item to a shopkeeper will ID it, you'll have to buy it back though if you want it, and it goes for less $$ if it's not ID'ed.

Though its a considerable manna drain in the early part of the game, identifiying is a great way of boosting your mental realm...
