I just came across Madras in Trynton and now have to make a choice among NPC's - that is, Madras, Vi or Myles. I realize that this depends on the makeup of my own party (fighter, ranger, bard, mage, bishop and monk), but I'm also curious to know what NPC's people find useful and ones they don't.

my opinion is, that npc only take exp and therefore i dont take one of them. If you want to, well RFS-81 is pretty good, he will go nearly everywhere but i guess every npc has his advantages. I hate Myles, Vi is not bad.

Have to agree with Niob on not taking the NPC's to eat xp, tho I might have taken RFS-81 if he wasn't so low (8th methinks) at the point I got to him compared to the rest of my party (at around 12 at that point). Hm, don't remember the levels anymore, but there was at least 4 levels difference between my party's lowest member and RFS-81.

I don't use NPC's, either, except to take Vi to He'li for the couple XP He'li gives, and Madras for about 5 minutes to make Doubleshot Crossbows, and there's a couple more much later on that i take if i want the XP reward you have to drag them around awhile to get. If you think you must keep one or two, keep Vi as first choice, and Madras. (of the three you listed)

I once did most of the game with Madras along-- I enjoy his comments and gadgeteers are very useful: even if you already have one, there are a lot of gadge items, and its often useful to be able to use more than one per round. He is my favorite NPC, though some of the others may aquire faster kill stats. Later in the game, you will also have the chance to hire a savant droid monk, an umpani bard, a trang, or 'private sparkle', [another trynnie] whose classes I can't remember.
Yet there are some areas where he won't go: bayjin and rappax rift. To get him to bayjin, i took his scuba gear away, let him drown fot the trip, then brought him back in bayjin without him complaining. Alas, when I drug him through the rift, he bitched incessanlty, and functioned under a 'hex' the whole time. Also, his engineering is relatively low for his level, and it takes a LONG time for him to make and use the upper level gadge items. Only gadges can use them, so when you dismiss him, you loose the advantages. Still, if you are playing for fun and aren't real concerned over building an Uber Party, its worth taking him along for a while, just for kicks. He will 'rob' your regular characters of some of their exp. points, though. Oru |

Interesting, no one seems to like Myles. I guess maybe I should stop feeding him xp's, and also training him up on lock and trap skills, and throw my bard into the pool instead...

Not only do I not like Myles, but he also doesn't stay with you for very long, and he doesn't really add much to your party, IMHO. You'll probably already have a Locks and traps guy in your party already, anyway.

Depends on your style, I like a full party so I usually have 6 characters and 2 RPCs. I take Myles usually through Trynton, after that I go for RFS and dump Myles right before I leave the swamp (he moans then anyways). RFS is my favorite. I also always take Vi, and drag her along everywhere whether she likes it or not

RFS-81 was simply a killing machine for my first party. Best thing about it was that RFS-81 goes almost anywhere. Vi is excellent too--except for not wanting to go to Rapax Rift. I was ready to smack her from all her complaining there.

RFS inspired me to make a monk in my next game. Fists of fury rule! I didn't like Vi my first game, but I already had a valk, and I didn't give her a chance in the second. A lot of people seem to like Madras, because gadgies rule anyway. If you really want to try them all out, don't forget Urq the mook from Arnika *grin*
