Hi everyone,
I just purchased Wiz8 a few days ago after a 6 year hiatus from the series, and it has me hooked again. I have a question for you all here: Is it worth it to try and switch professions in the game? I started with a normal rogue and I wanted to switch her to a ninja after getting some basic experience, and also was considering switching either my mage or my bard to a gadgeteer. I'm still relatively "low" level, I think, at level 7. Any insights? Thanks in advance! |

Thanks Megabot
I had read about some of the nifty stuff ninjas and gadgeteers could do, so I was wondering whether it would be worth it for me to switch professions in mid-game. This is my first time around playing Wiz8, and I started a party with a samurai, specialist mage, bishop, rogue, bard and valkyrie. |

Generally, it's best not to switch class. They changed switching a lot from previous games. Characters lose abilities when they change, and don't get them back when new level exceeds old.
For example, a fighter moving to a new class loses the berserk ability. Forever. Magic use will stay with a character, but unless the new class also has that type of magic, the magic skills can never be improved. When people do change class, they generally move a character between compatible professions, for instance priest to Lord, which retains the priest magic skills and allows improvement. I suggest that, for you first time through, stick with your original character classes. |

Xiombarg, I would suggest you not change any character classes in this game because it doesn't work the same way as the rest of the Series. Before, it would take you back to level 1 and you could level up quickly again, but in Wiz 8, you don't go back to Level 1. If at level 8 you turn your level 7 rogue to a ninja, you'll be a Level 8 character... 7 rogue levels and a Ninja level... and you won't go up to level 2 ninja until you get to level 9 (the levels are added here). So while everyone else in your party will be kicking butt at level 15, you'll have a level 7 Rogue/Level 8 Ninja... neither of which can compete with monsters at level 15.
Some people change classes once they've hit level 19 since most class requirements and spell requirements max at 18, but you don't see them earlier than that too often. One exception being to start as a Mage and switch to a Bishop at level 2 to get an extra boost in Wizardry, but that tactic doesn't seem to give that much of a benefit.

*yipes* That's VERY different than the old Wizardry games I've played. So if I changed my rogue to a ninja, I'd lose the backstab ability? Similarly, I'd no longer be able to improve camping (bard ability) as a gadgeteer? If that's the case, there's a definite disadvantage of changing classes.

Yep, they wanted to avoid the "super duper character" business of the last few games. So they made class changing pretty strict.
And yeah, a rogue->ninja switch would lose the backstab, and bard->gadgeteer would lose the improved camping ability. You have to think a little more about your party this time around. And don't be surprised if you find yourself starting over with several different groups. We've all been down that road ![]() |

i developed a whole rotation system in W7 to create characters with all skills at 100 and 800+ SP in all elements by changing every 6 levels(low HP req) for an incredibly long time at the handy guard summoner called Forbidden Zone, and ended with a Lord for the light swd, a Monk for the Zatoichi, and 4 Ninjas--a Fairy for the C o'C & the rest for the AC. These chars start out with 20 in all skills when imported. My challenge in any game i enjoy is to create the most ridiculously powerful char's without actually cheating. I really like this class-changing system because it's got the limiting factor in the HP req's continuing to increase, making a worthwhile challenge: Brekek is too boring when my chars need 8M, so i'm using Rapax Castle as an arena now, they generate pretty good stuff...
Anyway, i like starting with a Psi or Mage Fairy, who changes to Ninja as soon as she has all the good spells & powercast.(which keeps building). This way, she can get new spells, which her element points apply to right away. My Hobbit starts as a Rogue or Gadgeteer, then changes to Ninja or Lord, depending on what toys i find, as soon as her L&T gets around 85. She almost always ends up a Ninja for the AC & crits. I really like the way both weapon and magic crits work in W8. Much better than W7. Thanks! CIAO. Children Need All Six Billion Parents |
