for Marten's Bluff? I can't make the gouda vine
attach to any broken part of the bridge or the posts. Done the rest of the stuff, the shaman, Fuzz, agreed to kill the ratkins. killed lotsa other dorks plus the zoo. When I take the two lengths of the gouda vine back to the broken bridge and then merge them. I give them to the player, the player holds the vine and clicks
on the posts, boards, et cetera. I don't get a hand with the vine in it - the icon is a gold cone with the vine on it. I get a screen message saying "I beter keep these for later on." Duh. Can I get into the Rat tree from the ground level? Or just skip it all together?

Walk out on the broken bridge almost to the empty spot. Have the vine on the cursor, and click where it would go (the empty spot on the right side).

You can't skip fixing the bridge. You have to get to the Rattkin tree for two important items (not available just yet, but later on).

You said "Walk out on the broken bridge almost to the empty spot. Have the vine on the cursor, and click where it would go (the empty spot on the right side)." Does not work. The empty spot is also between the two planks sticking out a bit. The only empty spot on the right side is at the end of the plank. Clicking on empty spaces beyond the planks does nothing. Also the cursor stays as a cone, not a hand, but this is probably to tell me i'm using a merged item.

Basically when you get the "I'd better keep these" message, it means you're not close enough to the edge. I've always been able to walk up to the edge, merge the vines, put them on my cursor and just click out over into the middle of nowhere and it works.

In answer to your other question, you can skip Trynton this time to go get the idol... you may as well go through the mines and get the Trang arm while you're out there, but you WILL have to go to the Rattkin tree at some point.

If you look at the bridge, you'll see a rope line that goes all the way across on the left. On the right side, that line is broken. You have to click the vine in that empty spot where the line would be on the right. But you do have to be close enough for the game to accept that.
