Does the gadgeteer ever start hitting hard....every other character I have does fair amounts of damage...or has cool spells........seems the gadgeteer is almost useless....am thinking of changing him to a bard next time.

He does upgrade his weapon so that it can shoot darts, knives and later, who knows what.
He can also merge items for use and he can use items in battle, i.e. the lightning rod is an Enery Blast of a significant enough level to compensate where he lacks in sword skills early in the game, you just have to pay attention to his stamina when he uses it.
I have a game of nothing but basic characters and one is a gadgeteer, however I gave it up to play with the game I had going first, an all elite team except for the mage who were way ahead of the new party with the gadgeteer so I can't be of any more help to you in your decision to keep him or not, but I have found some gadgets throughout the Elite game that have me intrigued to get back to the basic party.
I can't see Wizardry creating a useless character.
Fellow member, Analander, is working on a list of items the gadgeteer can make and use...check the link in his signature to get to the site.

my gageteer is much better than my bard. his omni gun fires arrows and quarrels. 3X per attack and at 2 attacks a round. also it is at 10%blind 5%ko and 2%kill. there is NO better missle weapon as far as it goes for me.

he gets as many, if not more crits than my ranger and does significant damage with good ammunition. and even with crappy ammo he still gets the great special effects. Rangers? Hah!

ps. the gadgets are pretty cool, but not as good as the bards instruments.

In the beginning a Gadgeteer is rather weak, but when he levels and you found some items to merge he is a real killer. Like mentioned before the damaged depends a lot on the amunition, but also he can cast Heal All or Tsunamie later. Got the 2nd most kills in my party by now, only the mage beats him with his nuke spell

Read through the tips at the top of the forum, those two give LOTS of help as to where to find things.

for the meantime, for all the gadgeteer info, go to www.geocities.com/jandrall

Keep in mind that bullet stones as ammo are junk. Early on, you need to upgrade to spike stones (Anna in Arnika) and later impaling stones (Crock) while you wait for the Omnigun to be improved to where it can fire arrows. Just changing to better stones can make quite a difference in damage (not to mention KO chances).

And as others have said, the gadgets go a long way to making this class quite useful from midgame on.
