I did it with a Monk. Also know someone who did it with a swashbuckler dualled at 13th level to a cleric.

I've currently got a multi-classed fighter/mage that is kicking butt. The only problem was trying to get a good role for his fighting abilities. I think the game gives low rolls to str, const, dex when you're a mage.

Plain Jane thief.
Or a straight bard. Both should be very challenging, and yet not leave you stumped on traps and the like. Since your soloing, the sneaking should be a lot more fun, too. Nothing like the sure realization that they'll stomp you into a bloody pulp if they find out you're there....

Perk, you can always re-arrange your points.
im currently playing a monk - but theres a certain character im _eager_ to kill (met him way back in BG1, but coudnt do anything about him then) but cant get through the door. for the first time in this game im planning on building Crom Faeyr, just to creak this one door down. loseing the Belt of Frost Giant Strength will hurt , but i know a better one. even better would be an item to cast knock - are there any?
