if the monsters just level up with you?
I'm in Tryton at (whatever bough it is) fighting the 3 Oakies in the no magic room and all my party (of 6 persons) are at Level 7. I haven't bothered to click the little symbol to level up my chars for a long time. It's tough and I haven't beat them well enough yet (keep losing at least 1 party member), but i am close. I wonder tho (aside from acquiring new spells), is there any point in leveling up? Also, talk about random monsters. I visted the cemetary (at night time - don't know if that makes a difference) and I looted the main mauseleum (-sp) and I was avoiding another troop of (whatever the name of those ghostly looking tynnies with their caster chic boss) so I ran outa there and when I was exiting the front cemetary gates the land kinda dips out a little and there was ANOTHER party of them. It was too late and I was too close and they were able to surround me. So I loaded up to try again, and this time, that other party at the cemetary gates were not there at all. I found that very odd i mean, at what point are they spawning cause from where I loaded from, it was just a short trek when your sprinting. |

Hey. Yeah, there's a definit point to leveling up. Sooner or later you'll be bigger than the monters that spawn in some areas and you'll be trying to get through even higher monster spawning areas and you'll need every level up you can get. For instance, I used to take forever to make the run from Arnika to Trynton at avg. level 7 or so. Now at level 15 I just walk right through them all. You definitely will get to a point when you can handle just about anything a section has to offer. And hey, this is an RPG. It's all about leveling up.
As to the spawning points, never can tell. Think it's random and you never know what it's going to throw at you. The monsters may have headed off in the other direction as well. They wander at random, so you may run into them again later. |

quote: There is more to leveling up then just the acquiring of new spells. Did you forget about the points you put into your stats? You gain certain expert skills when an attribute reaches 100 (see page 126 of the game manual). Then there are the academic skills themselves. You gain extra hits, higher chance to kill in one hit, etc. when these skills are raised. There are tougher monsters in other areas of the game. They will not all be your level now. You have to grow into their level as well. Spells would not be all that important to you if you had no magic casters in your party, but even they will gain during combat but at a slower pace then when you add points at each level. All-in-all it is your choice. It is your group and you are free to make the call with them. It would be interesting to see just how far you can get without leveling. At any rate, have fun. Definitely level up as soon as you are allowed to. Just make sure you practice alot in between levels, do as much as you can in every combat, rest when you need to and recast buffing spells, etc. If you can keep your party's skill points high relative to their level you'll be fine. My advice is always have 2 RPCs with your party, will slow their rate of leveling as they take exp point shares.

Gimli, I will have to disagree with you on the NPC's. I'm on my 5th game (but not through to the end yet currently lvl 18/20) I found that skipping the NPC's and hoarding all the points myself was more helpful. I found no anvantage in "slowing" levelling, but rather that I did better by gaining stats (int/dex/etc) as fast as I could.
I did however wait to level up, at least in the early going and that seemed to make life easier in the monastery. Also that way I waited until I had 3 spell picks and had added 3 level-ups worth of points to the primary (ie alchemy) skill area so I had better picks. Another point is to wait until you have had a chance to find all the books available before levelling and deciding if you want to pick any spells (or wait and save the pick till next time) That way you don'twate picks on spells you could have bought/found.

You can hold your spell picks and still level up. I've done that in order to save spell picks for higher level spells. Levelling up has all kinds of advantages and no disadvantages. The monster generation is random. Sometimes you get ones with higher level stats and sometimes you don't. But you lose enormous assets by nto levelling up.

I agree. You only lose out on a better party by not leveling and giving yourself your stat upgrades as well as new spells.
As I see it, not leveling for a long time to make things easier is a kind of exploit or way of cheating. If you don't mind cheating and making the game as easy as possible, then so be it. I personally get no enjoyment from making a game as easy as possible. I never use cheat codes or methods to get by. It's bad enough we can save/reload just to get things the way we want it. If your looking for a way to get your spell points up heres one way. These spells I always have up no matter where I am, this way I dont have to cast them while in battle. This makes all the difference in the world. Armorplate, Enchant Blade, Missle Shield and Magic Screen. After every time you camp or these spells disappear, recast all of them at your first level of dark orange. Quite quickly you will be able to cast all of these at power 7 green. They will then last 2 complete camps and some walking around. A game is only as good as you make it. Sitting around casting knock knock will make you better, but what fun is that. Use your abilities as much as you can while you are playing. It's more realistic and more fun that way. [ 02-27-2002: Message edited by: Draq ] |
