I'm on my 5th restart of the game. I only seem to get as far as the swamp and then I decide I don't like how my party is shaping up and start over again. Even so, I haven't gotten tired of the parts I've done over, 5 times.

Pretty sad, huh?

That is pretty sad, but completely understandable.

No party is going to be perfect, especially at the early levels -- I say ride one out to completion. You'll wind up being pretty comfortable with your group.

Are you spending time exercising your characters in the things you want them to be?

Examples:
When your rogue / bard goes to open a trapped chest -- do you just do it, or do you inspect a few extra times to get a point or two in locks and traps?

When you are fighting a group that is not too hard, do you clobber them with maximum spells etc. or do you sit there pounding them with level 1 fireballs etc while your other magic users immobilize them or buff your guys up?

After a fight and you need healing -- do you just camp? Or heal with maximum level in a spell? Or have your most needy healer heal with level one heal spell until done?

BTW -- I noticed the number of posts you have made. Immpressive
Is that on this forum only or on all forums run by IronWorks?

I started at the Wizard's And Warriors Forum way back in November of 2000 and spent a lot of time at General Discussions and the War Forum too!

I think I've been starting over so much because I just don't have the time to really get into it, so I don't manage my group's developement so well and become unhappy with them. Must be that the new job I got last November is distracting me. (Hmmm maybe I should quit! )

Just build a good party exmple:

Lizzarman figter -> Good early
Ferie Ninja--> Good after getting "Cane of Corpus from Barlone!
Rawulf priest--> Good alwais
Mook Bard--> Good alwais
Faerie Mage--> Good alwais
Hobbit Alcemist--> Good alwais

Then you have a nice party that get you trough the game easely! Only remember to train them right!!!!!!!!

You're not alone - I restarted 4 times before I got a party I was comfy with. I did a lot of experimenting in the earlier parties, figured out what I liked, then made my ultimate party. There's stuff you only learn about character choices and results after you've played awhile.

I have a friend that keeps stalling out in the monastery because he persists in restarting - too many choices with six characters, he says. LOL!

My current party:

Human Ninja
Human Samurai
Hobbit Bard
Hobbit Ranger
Faerie Mage/Bishop (dualled at level 8)
Elven Priest/Bishop (also switched at level 8)
Vi and RFS-81

I originally had different fighters, but found I was doing a lot of ranged fighting, and I wanted both fighters to have some magic (and not the same spells).

The Ninja and the Samurai are both doing bigtime melee damage - the Samurai has Fang and the Ninja is fighting barehanded. Having 4 out of 6 characters able to cast spells has been nice.

I just drive 'em insane and then move in and hack them to bits.

Myself am playing with my imported char. from 7.
felpur samurai
felpur ninja
felpur ninja
rawolf monk
human bard
mook mage

still haveing some prob in the game, however average level is 9 and I still getting my butt kicked sometimes. I like what you said before bout castng level 1 fireballs and such, however thats bout all I can do since my mage tends to kill my party at higher power levels. Think I may have to make him a psyonic next level up.

You're not alone.

I experimented with about three parties (both advanced about up to the swamp like yours) before establishing the right group I'm running with now. I'm pretty anal about having variety in my group. I did a lot of mix and matching of races and classes to see who fit what in their personality. Took me awhile, but that's part of the RPG's entertainment; creating your own group.

I know what you mean about getting a little neurotic about finding the perfect party, here are my suggestions

Lizard fighter-swords-high vit, and strength,U need a powerhouse to get you through those lean times at the beggining

Humam Samurai-swords-speed,sense,some firemagic- he will be good at the start -even better at mid game and rock at the end

Fairy ninja-staves-senses-dex-crit, Will just suck, u will curse the day u made such a krappy character, but only at the first few levels,
he will then become pretty dececnt mid game, then rock like the sam at the end.I would make him a fairy rogue at the beginning then switch to a ninja at level 5, rogues go up quick, and it gives u a good start on PP and LP. plus lots of level up points

Mook Ranger-senses-bow-alchemy,give him a doubleshotcrossbow or triple and give him lots of cheap ammo, watch his bow and ranged skills go up all by themselves quick, He rocks at the begining, kinda lulls in the middle but picks up again when he gets the giant sword wich u can attack from the back with.plus criticals with ur bow

fairy mage-int-pie-wizardry- they will always be good to great helpers in any party. but u might want to switch to bishop at level 2 and study only wiz and psionics, then when u get level 6 spells in psionics go back to wizardry so u can level up faster and get all ur wizardry spells, then if ur still kicking go back to bishop.

Rawulf Priest-pie-div-speed and dex, use him a lot, train up ur realms
u will not be spending as much points on realms on him like on the bishop-mage, ur gonna keep him a priest for as long as possible slowly building up his strength speed and dex to respectability, then u switch him to a LORD or VAlk, and u have a priest that isnt a wimp.

thats it thats the key to a great party (well at least to my party, hehe)

U end up with a very balanced party IMHO, U have magic from all four realms, u have one huge tank, 3 guys that critical a lot,a thief type, 5 pretty good meelee people, and one all around magician,
now if u like bards and gadgets ur screwewd,
no room for all that in my party,
although u can use a bard for 14 levels then switch to a rogue, u can use it to replace ur ninja, but i still prefer my ninja

I never try to have a perfect party. I usually try to have 3 fighters a thief healer and a mage. What I have right now is a human gadgeteer, Mook psionic, dwarven valk, draconian fighter, human female priest, human female mage, rfs 81...I did have Vi until she ran away from the sea caves. I made my gadgeteer a ranger for one level and changed him back, I didn't like him as a ranger. I ment for this group to be just a test group before I actually got very far into the game but I got to liking them and most of them are about 16 now. The psionic is only 14..he got kid napped and it took me forever to figure out where he was and to rescue him.

This group all in all does pretty good..they killed Nessie and that was before I found the psionic Mook
