hello all.
I've just cleared out the monastery and my Samurai (level 6) hasn't had one measly critical hit! Not one! He's dualing with a couple of swords. What are the best stats to bump up to start making him do the business. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have gone with 2 plain old fighters...... |

I was concerned about my Samurai as well; she's only gotten maybe a couple critical hits, but I think that 'critical hit' is a later developing skill. In other words, you really have to have a high skill number for it to be effective.
OTOH, Shanna (my samurai) will go to town with the lightning strike - WHACK!WHACK!WHACK!WHACK! - 17-24 points. I usually get one LS about every 3 combats now... I believe that she's level 9 or 10. Overall, I think the Samurai just develops more slowly than a normal fighter. |

I get more lightning attacks than crits but in the end they pretty much add up to the same thing for me I love my Bushido Blade..then there is fang for my berserked fighter....

Well, my current party is the first to go without a pure fighter and I haven't regretted it one bit. The samurai does start off a bit slower than the fighter and can make the early game slightly more difficult, but I found my girl to well worth it.
I too was a bit apprehensive at first, especially when facing Brekkek. My Valk had gone missing so my Sam was the only melee type left in my party. It was a tense moment...actually I was like "how the F*** am I going to do 400+ damage to this guy before he eats me." But my Sammy, who's always looking out for me, said "Don't worry about a thing darlin"(She's a little bit of east meets west) and promptly proceeded to decapitate the beast in round one. Now, at level 13 she IS without a doubt the Daisho Master. I see a crit at least once a battle. As far as developement goes, I put 3 points into speed every level until it maxed(at 13). I also put 3 points into Dex until it hit 70 (this was early on) and then I switched to Str. My Str should max around lvl 19. In the mean time, now that Speed is maxed, I'm placing 3 in str, in 1 1/2 Dex, and 1 1/2 in Senses. For skills, I stopped putting points in sword around lvl 6 and it's at 85 right now without the profession bounus. I have placed 3 points in wizardry every level since the 5th, and practice her air and water magic diligently. Dual and critical strike are important early on but they also tend to go up pretty fast through use. Anyway, my advice is to have a little patience with your Samurai and keep him or her well outfitted. Serops [ 01-11-2002: Message edited by: Serops ] |

As Ryu said, focus on senses. I'd also push strength, maybe a bit of piety, too, since it actually increases the chances of improving skills; and of course, you'll want to give full points to critical and swords every time the samurai levels.
Don't worry about turning your samurai into a spellcaster for a long time. As they gain levels and points in those skills, they'll become very dangerous. My samurai is my point man: he regularly engages in lightning strikes, uses a cursed blade, and has a ready supply of Superman potions at his disposal. He killed Nessie alone in three rounds. He critted a hogar in one. ![]() |

yup!
senses is where it's at. i cranked senses on my Mook Ranger and he criticals A LOT. in one battle (his ranged attack ability was about 90 at the time. that affects criticals for rangers too.) he kill 3 out of 6 monsters i was facing with criticals. normally, it's not that often, but you get the picture =) |

Cheers for all that.
I guess the "way of the senses" is the way to go. |

Had to put this in - my Samurai, Shanna, critic'd an opponent with her bow yesterday, then later, when facing some very large, very angry cheese-eaters (don't want to "spoil" things

Just my .02 worth: Give your Samurai Bloodlust as early as you can. They do insane amounts of damage at the higher levels.
