Based on my experience so far with a valk (Vi), a monk, a samurai, and a ninja, it can be very worthwhile developing their spell skills. The benefit is not felt early on cos why would your samurai want to cast a low level energy blast when he can slash 6 times to over 100 damage, but later, its power will be shown when he can summon elemental!
But my take is that these hybrid fighters should focus on selected realms. The reason is that they simply do not cast spells often enough to justify spending points in an underutilised realm anyway. For example, for the monk which uses the psionic spell book. Put all your points in mental, if you got extra, maybe fire, but that's about it. It is not really necessary for your monk to know any other realm because he will then be spreading his points too thin. It is ultimately better to have a level 24 monk that has 100 mental, able to cast mind flay rather than have a level 24 monk that has 40 points in all realm skills. Right now, My hybrids are only level 15/16 but they can now cast up to level 3 spells already. The ranger and Vi can cast up to level 4 spells. Their superiority over normal fighters are becoming more apparent. In time to come, when they hit over level 22 and they are able to cast level 5 - 7 spells, plus fight, they will be awesome! Please note though that I started putting points into their magic skills like wizardry, psionsic from the very start. Even then, I realised that it is too difficult and inefficient to spread themselves over 6 realms. Samurai should concentrate on fire, water and divine magic (for summon elemental). Rangers should concentrate on air, earth, and divine. Valkries should go mainly divinity, with a bit of water if possible. monks should go for mental and a bit of fire. Most of their divinity will go up naturally if you use them to heal wounds often. (except samurai). Just my take on producing hybirds that can fight as well as cast spells.
