Hi,
i am interested in altering the source code for DC or UA. i'm not interested in nice graphics, but extending the rules and options for those games. for instance : adding the monk and assassin classes psionics weapon type versus armor or natural armor modifiers (PH, 1st ed) options for hiring henchmen and hirelings (DMG, 1st ed) constructing castles (DMG, 1st ed) mining rules (DSG) all the weather rules from the WSG kits (2nd ed) Critical Hits (C&T) feats (3rd ed) That's a start. I'm looking to code the most advanced (realistic) version of each official rule. What language would i need to learn, and where would i start? Would there be other people interested in such a thing? I don't really have any coding skills, but i have something in the way of indexing skills. I can go through the rules, and put together the most advanced version of D&D, from the three (four, counting D&D from the 70s) editions, and organize it in an accessible index format. (Actually, i've already started on this) Also, a version that would be compatible with tabletop (ie sans adventure), but it could be used for character generation, weather generation, and calculating travel times and encounters between adventures. Something that could convert CC2 maps into UA or DC format. Most of the work does not involve graphics, and i'm guessing that graphics are what take the most time to code. Anyway, what would you rather play? Something with really cool graphics, or something with UA graphics, that uses *all* the D&D rules. I'm thinking that i have about 80 handbooks on the shelves, and that's not counting the Dragon articles. toril.info ecologyfund.com

Hi. You should look at the official DC site, I think CocoaSpud has a lot of these things in mind.
http://uaf.sourceforge.net/ The project is being done in C++. As for assisting tabletop gaming, there are already a ton of freeware programs that do these things (except for converting CC2 to a .bmp or .png which I have no idea about). -manikus |

Welcome to the I-works DC forum, prespos.
Now as for your post: Quote:
As for the critical hits and weapon vrs armor types (I found those and other sweet optional rules from the "combat options" rulebook); That is a ruleset that we've discussed. I envision the ability for a mod designer to select different rulesets (like for example, you could download a version of the rulesets of: the dnd boxset, ADnD 1st edition, ADnD 2nd edition, or even the 3rd (which REALLY changes the rules of the game) and also select rulesets that cover weather (and all the different effects thereof including hypothermia, increased chance of becoming sick, and fatigue), food & water, different poisons, ect, ect ect...). I had talked to the DC programmer, CocoaSpud about this. He's kinda more interested in getting the ability to do the "goldbox style" simpler rule games and getting that done FIRST, before taking on adding a bunch of optional rules while trying to get the program working right. Currently he's been working on the enemy AI and magical code/spell effects (last I heard). Now, that said; you should contact CocoaSpud. I had talked to him about this B4, and he said that he might be interested in help. I didn't really talk much about it, tho; due to computer problems at the time (can't program when you can't use the computer). Being shareware, and that the sourcecode is available; I don't see why he'd have any problem with you getting the sourcecode and adding any optional rules to it. But again, give him an Email and talk to him about it. and as for converting any programs maps/pictures to DC, the only way I know of to do this is to use a screen capture utility. I had Paint shop pro 7, and that had one that allowed me to take any open windows screen and copy it to the editor of Psp 7, then you have to save it as a file that DC can use. As for anything else, we welcome new ppl and any questions. SilentThief PS, there are a few places you can talk to us, and the easiest place to talk to CocoaSpud is in the UA forever yahoo msg board. Check this (and other things)out at the "offical DC links" page here: http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...;f=13;t=000569

Sorry, Z. This is just an observation of mine. I had in the past tried to talk 2 spud here and I went unanswered. When I asked the same question on yahoo, spud answered right away....
I prefer this place (feels more like "home" and far friendlier and less commercial than Yahoo). I mean yahoo doesn't compare at all to ANY of this: and my personal favorite (and it is hard to pick a favorite from all these awesome pics) "http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/noncgi/smiles/new/ghoul.gif" (I guess it isn't working, but you know the picture) SilentThief [ 01-04-2005, 03:06 PM: Message edited by: SilentThief ]

Hmmm, maybe I should just close this forum then, seeing as it's not being used, and Spud is on Yahoo now. If the forum doesn't pick up, I'll probably close it, and just link to the Yahoo one. I just don't get why folks would rather go there with spam, ads and all instead of a site dedicated.. As you said, this is a home type atmosphere, and I thought would be great. Ah well.

Z!
I for one would weep if this forum were to close! Don't do it man! Do we need to organize a sit-in or something? Hmmm? I for one think of this as my primary DC 'place to be', and probably post 99% of all my DC related topics here. I know things seem slow right now, but I am sure they are going to pick up, especially once we get some more designs out there. I for one am currently working on getting an old old FRUA mod converted to DC for folks to enjoy with the hope that it will liven things up. Please please PLEASE don't close it? I probably post more at yahoo than anyone else in the forum, but it's certainly not b/c I like yahoo better. There are over a hundred people on the yahoo list and maybe if DC got famous, that number would swell to like 120 or something.
![]() If it's not too much of a burden, please keep this forum open. There are at least five of us reading it. ![]() I'm trying to think of reasons why people might find the yahoo list more desirable...I came up with a couple of possible reasons (These are just hypothetical), 1.) file storage- yahoo offers 20 gigs. (okay, this one is not hypothetical) 2.) yahoo is a popular brand name just like coke, viagra or microsoft 3.) old habits die hard- a lot of the folks were on the list before it migrated to yahoo. 4.) people don't realize that this forum can do everything yahoo can- like send them emails, etc. 5.) broken wills- people receive so much unwanted crap on the internet, that they don't realize that there is any alternative. 6.) people want the yahoo DC group to be like the FRUA yahoo group, when they should want this forum to be like the FRUA yahoo group (in many ways). -manikus |

I'm with Hivetyrant, I would never of known about DungeonCraft any other way than this forum. I believe it is MUCH better than Yahoo and I think we just need a bit more advertising when posting in other places.
Tarlarnon is right, once we get closer to a 1.0 release and more mods start getting made, this place will pick up. |
