I like playing as a cleric. You can fight decently, the extra healing can be a lifesaver, it makes sense with the storyline, and there are some great wisdom boosts available (three Tomes of Understanding in BG1!)

There isn't really a proper way to answer your question. It is up to you to first decide what you like. Playing a fighter through BG1 and importing him into BG2 is relatively easy. But if you want to play a mage, you might have a difficult time going through BG1, although you'll find that you can dominate BG2 with the same mage. What is your playing style? Sneaking up on people and backstabbing them? Using magic spells tactically? Protecting and healing your party?

I've been thru BG2 already and I usually am a mage, actually a Kensai/mage, I have started 2 games, one as a cleric/mage and one as a fighter.

hey,
the true answer is that the game can be solo'd by either a pure fighter or mage, or any class in the middle I have soloed a mage through the entire BG saga and recorded it in a very quick, non quirky format. Have a flick through if you want to know the best road to get the best items and best XP fast. I'm now doing a dwarven fighter which is going very well. It all depends the best classes. Here is a list of the VERY best classes to solo or lead your party through the ENTIRE saga. Only by completing the entire saga can you get the most powerful characters because of the tombs in BG1, which can create a huge help. Bonuses in str and dex make swords and bows more powerful and acurate as well as increase AC. Getting the con tomb early means higher HP rolls. if you are a mage/cleric then wis and int tombs will give you spell bonuses and higher lore. Even if you are a mage, always roll max str, dex and con. NOTE: some of these are kits but for BG1 you just import your character and when you start a new game in BG2 just drop your exported character and he will be there but you get the option of chosing a kit. Dwarf - Bezerker: Best fighter class. In BG1 you can chose to go with battle axe and throwing axes or go with quick swap sword and long bow. Both work great, but i prefer axes and if you aren't soloing then kalid can use greywolf's sword. Dwarves will regenerate at 20 con so reading the tomb will make one rest fully heal you. At the end of BG1 your dwarf will have over 120 HP, 19 str and 20 con with regen... nice huh?. In BG2 then dual wield stonefire and frostreaver in early game, then later dual wield axe of unyielding and cromfayer in offhand (giving 25 str) ... use improved haste and critical strike with the grandmastery patch and gauntlets of extraord spec then you have 5x2 = 10 attacks per round of raw aggression... = best melee in the game Elf - Fighter (and keep as pure fighter in BG2) This is a VERY underrecognised class. Elfs get +1 to longbows and longswords which is handy, esp in BG1. Use greywolf's sword and quickswap with longbow of marksmanship in BG1 and get ** longsword and rest of points in bows. In BG2 you will now have 19 str 18 con and 20 DEX! This is great with bows. You now have officially the second best archer in the game (besides the ranger kit) but you can wear full platemail and attack better than a paladin or ranger with a longsword or two handed sword for a quick swap weapon. To me, this is a much better choice than a ranger as you get the same shot rate, better melee and better AC all for giving up a little extra arrow damage and the called shot ability (which while good, you can do without). Elf - Archer If you wont listen to me this is still a pretty good choice Dwarf - Fighter/Theif Fighter/Thiefs get an exellent HLA pool in TOB and are a good choice. I prefer to go for more specialised fighters, mages or clerics but this is still a good choice Human - Kensai/Mage The fighter is undeniably the easiest character to play either solo or in party for BG1. In BG2 convert to a kensai as mages cannot wear armour anyway (but can still wear robes?) and you have a mage with very good offense. Make sure you give grandmastery in daggers or slings so you have a good ranged weapon (kensai's will stop you from using bows) Reading scrolls will help you level up faster. Human - Inquisitor This is a great class because its abilities trounce mages but if you plan on taking a party then just specialise in being a fighter or mage as you can get keldorn in BG2, which is where things start to get harder. Human - Necromancer I solo'd the series with this class. You get the extra spell of a specialist mage and the only really good spell you miss out on is mirror image and simuraclum. BUt hey i solo'd it without them. Look how to do a "TimeStop Assault" in my TOB walkthrough. You can kill ANY enemy, even bosses, in one TSA if done correctly. Timestop -> imp alacrity -> (now keep hitting the pause button after every spell for rapid fire spell delivery) -> lower resistance (on target) x3 -> AbiDalzims Horrid Wilting x5 or x6 ->x3 skulltrap -> summon x3 skeletons near you -> haste then -> morderkien's sword x2 -> dragon's breath. If that doesn't kill everything then they will prob be unconscoius from dragons breath or your summons can kill them The ravager is the only enemy in the WHOLE game this didn't kill instantly ... |
