I need help with Chainfire...

In the last month or so, I've read the first 8 books of the Swort of Truth series. For a while the series has been going downhill, but I didn't want to stop after going so far in.

I've just got Chainfire, I looked at the first page, saw Kahlan had somehow been forgotten, I looked at the last chapter, and she's still forgotten. I've had to take breaks out of boredom while I was reading book 7 and 8. I'm pissed that book 9 seem to be stalling the story, and I'm not pleased to see Kahlan gone.

I'm very close from stoping the series right there. Can someone that has read the book tell me what's going to happen in it, spoilers and everything, so that I can decide if it's worth investing more time in the series?

I'd really appreciate it. I've nearly reached my limit and I'd really like to know what I'm getting into this time.
