So, who else has seen this movie? I heard it got some bad reviews but reasoned that with a budget of 150 million Euro.. well, it ought to be entertaining at the very least. And it was. 'Alexander' is a three hour epic about the life of Alexander the Great. I don't think it is entirely historically accurate, but I'm not a specialist on the topic, and this movie didn't inspire me enough to become one. The opening of the movie led me to believe that this indeed the worst movie of the year. The dialogues got on my nerve (150 mil and no money for a proper scriptwriter?) and the 'young Alexander' seemed a bit too wise for his age. The movie quickly compensates later on though, and is certainly better then other similair movies that were released recently, such as 'King Arthur'. From Alexanders childhood you are taken a few years into the future (which is all narated by Anthony Hopkins, who plays the part of an old general of Alexander, although it takes some time to learn which one), when Alexander faces the 250-000 strong army of Darius of Persia with only 40-000 of his elite Macedonians. The main attraction of this movie is not the battles though, but the character development. The arrogance of Alexander, and the constant battle of loyalty VS greed his underlings seem to experience. This was done quite nicely, and Collin Farell does an excellent job as the semi-mad king. What I don't like is the fact that they obviously intended to give the movie quite a bit of depth, but decided to water-down mpst the dialogues (that, or they were just really poorly written). To summarize my opinion: I doubt it'll win any oscars, but it's certainly good enough to keep you entertained for a few hours.

I heard Angelina Jolie makes several interesting appearences in this film, not all them completely clothed, is this true? (So I can decide whether or not it's appropriate for a family audience ).

Fans of Jolie are out of luck, but definately not a family movie.

The main complaint about this movie was supposed to be the gayness-level involved. Now it didn't really bothered me that much. There was more a genuine showing of affection between two men (with make-up, ok )rather than fysical contact. I believe contact other than a hug was only showed once. Now bi-sexuality was more common in those days, again, not quite as we have bi-sexuality now. It didn't really annoy me as much. Still, I too am not a historian, well at least not that far back, so I don't know exactly what's correct or not. Good flick nevertheless!
