So, anybody seen it yet? I'm heading out to it tonight, so no unmarked spoilers, please.
It stars Tom Cruise as a killer and Jamie Foxx as a cabdriver. I read a review in the paper that seemed to like it. It should be a welcome decent movie at the boxoffice this summer.

I like Tom Cruise as a bad guy. I really enjoyed the film. Jamie Foxx is actually becoming a real actor. I've got a spoiler on the movie mistakes thread regarding Collateral you should read after the movie.

Well, I quite liked it. My buddy the film critic wasn't nearly as happy with it, but Collateral is a solid movie. The script was weak in spots, otherwise I would rate it, and the movie, higher.
Here's my ratings, out of five Soundtrack - 2 Script - 3 Acting - 4.5 (for Foxx and Cruise, primarily) Atmosphere - 4 Overall - 3.5 Criticism Spoilers - DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE * * * * * * * * * The first 2/3 or so of the movie was very good, up until the cab crash scene. After that, it became too Hollywood-formulaic. Endless chase scene, the dying cellphone, a shootout, etc. It would have made a better movie if both of them had died in the taxi and if Max had seen the picture of the intended target, then died, perhaps after a bit of dialogue with Vincent. I'll stretch a point, and say it would be ok if Max survived the crash. Either way, it would make more sense than a cabbie shooting a contract killer and getting away without a scratch. I though the opening sequence tried too hard to be cool with product placement, angles, and the constant switching of soundtrack songs. The jazz was good, but I thought most of the rest of the soundtrack was out of place, particularly the awful singing in the middle part of the movie, right after the silence and serious dialogue in the cab. Now for the good criticisms - I am occasionally reminded that Tom Cruise can act. This is one of those times. Jamie Foxx, too, was a good supporting actor here. Both of them were convincing in their roles, and didn't strike any wrong notes (aside from the final shootout). The other actors (e.g. Ruffalo and Pinkett-Smith) did a reasonable job of overcoming the weakness of the roles given to them by the script. The plug-uglies were well casted. There were some amusing one-liners in the movie, as well as some quite funny moments (Foxx when the body lands on his cab, the scene with his mother, talking to Felix, talking to the dispatcher, Cruise tripping over the chair). The shootout in the nightclub had the required amount of cool factor. Cruise and Foxx had good dialogue in the cab. I'd happily see this again. [ 08-13-2004, 12:48 PM: Message edited by: Aerich ]

<font color=pink>I saw it last week and loved it. I thought Cruise was great! SPOILS BELOW!!
. . . . . . . . . . I particularly liked a few specific scenes. The club scene was awesome IMO, like the look on Cruise's face after he stepped on that guys neck was perfect, all pissed off and twitchy ![]() He was a good ruthless killer. This is definately being added to my DVD collection when it comes out. The only thing I didn't really get and thought was random was the coyotes running across the street...I mean I know they're everywhere in SoCal, but it was the middle of frickin LA...I just sat there and thought "wtf" lol </font> [ 08-15-2004, 03:00 AM: Message edited by: Lady Blue03 ]

The coyotes were a metaphor for Vincent. Hunters out of place and lost, but not by much, and nevertheless confidently stalking through the night.
In one aspect, the movie was a large tribute to LA. The discussion between Pinkett and Foxx about how to best get across town, etc. The movie took a lot of lazy, slow looks at the city, more than is normally allowed in Hollywood formulae. |
