I have read all Dune books to date (the six original Frank Herbert ones, the Prelude to Dune trilogy and the two books of the Butlerian Jihad trilogy which are already out) and I have my opinions about them. I've read older threads about Dune here on Ironworks and I can only agree about the butchering of the books in the film version which was decidedly awful and boring, and I couldn't even finish it even though I am a fan of the books.
The original six dune books are all good, with the possible exception of Messiah which I think was a bit shallow and short. My favourite dune books would have to be the original and Heretics. IMO Heretics had a great plot and was brilliantly written. I was so sad when I found out after reading the end of Chapterhouse that Frank Herbert had died before writing the last book in the series. This sadness lasted until reading the prologue to House Atreides. There they said that Brian Herbert an Kevin J. Anderson (both of whose writing style is decent, but not as decent as Frank Herberts) will write the last book from notes they found after Frank Herberts death. I've heard lots of rumors about the book, among others that it might come out in two books because of its length. I am greatly awaiting this book. The authors have said that it will be made after they finish work on the Butlerian Jihad trilogy. It looks as if it could be published in 2005 or 2006. I've created this thread for people to be able to express their opinions on Dune books in general and what they expect from Dune 7. So if you have any thoughts please go ahead.

'Dune' - superb book. The rest of the Dune series - bad, getting steadily worse. The Prequels - read like good fan fiction, but fan fiction none-the-less. Haven't read Butlerian Jihad...
Have you seen anything of the Sci-Fi Channel's miniseries? It's a very close adaption of 'Dune' and bears no similarity to Lynch's movie at all.

ive watched the first triology of the dune series.. personally it was a little boring BUT have you watched the latest one ( i just watched it a couple of weeks ago) Children of Dune Triology in DVD. I think it was great how they were able to do it. Better effects and better plot. Although the last bit was abit out of proportion (not wanthing to spoil

I've already heard about the Sci-Fi channel series but I haven't seen them. Is that the one where in Childre of Dune the children of Muad'Dib are played by actors who are around 20 years of age?

I'll have to somehow get hold of that. Still I think its a shame that 20 year old actors play 8-9 year old children.

Children Of Dune has started well, but if it is like the other movies it will probably get boring, dont get me wrong, I liked the other movies, but it was a bit stretched out.

The old Kyle Maclachlan Dune movie had no point what so ever. The person who read the Dune books as something like *that* is bound to have mental problems. It exaggarated way too much with the Good versus Evil concept, and ignored all of the intelligent things that made the book so great. It was still fun to watch though, as crazy as it was.
The TV series for the first Dune book was pretty good. It had many things to appease Dune fans but it bothered me with slightly exaggarating G vs. E, and with making the baron and some other characters seem stupid. In the books, ALL of the politicians were very intelligent, and Frank Herbert motioned that extremely well. I haven't read the second book completely, since I was a bit bored with it - I don't like to read books mostly. Oh, and if anyone wants to know, the videos in the C&C: Dune computer games are just as bad as the first movie |

I foudn teh first book was very good, the second blew chunks and never picked up the later ones, although I heard they continue a cycle of good->crap->less good than previous good-> crap-> less good than previous good-> crap ad infinitum, so I don't feel I missed much.

I saw the Childrens of Dune trilogy, and really liked it.
I didn't know those characters were originally 8-9 years old, as the story was changed to fit teenagers and 20 years old in it.
