First off, please don't get upset, I'm not being sarcastic here! But I am interested in why, 6 years after it's release, you are all still playing BG and the game seems popular enough to support such an active forum.

Haven't games moved on since BG was launched? Aren't there better games? Better graphics? Aren't you all BG-bored yet?

In my case, I've only just discovered BG. I haven't played any computer games for at least 10 years, since my beloved Commodore Amiga died and I got into PnP RPGs instead. (I still have fond memories of the old SSI RPG's like Pools of Radiance and Buck Rogers.) I wandered into the games shop out of curiosity last month, saw BG on sale for $20, and thought 'what the hell!'. So that's my excuse - I've no knowledge of current games, no idea what better games might be out there, no idea how BG stacks up against the new stuff. And that's fine because I'm not a serious gamer, and I'm having lots of fun.

So, what's your excuse? Why are you all still playing BG? Is it still a great game? Once you've finished it once, what keeps you comng back for more?

It's just a very well-made game with a great storyline and open-ended gameplay. Combined with Tales of the Sword Coast, Shadows of Ahm and Throne of Bhaal the storyline becomes godlike (boom boom).

The love of classical games comes primarily from their timeless playability. Very old games that I also love include C64 Elite and Pirates! (recently re-released). Gameplay isn't just about graphics.

There are very few modern RPGs that are it's equal in either storyline or playability. If you were after a good modern RPG I would recommend Knights of the Old Republic and Morrowind.

i started playing after i was 30 and that's 2 or 3 years ago now . . .

i don't really know any better - i've played PC games only sporadically over the years and never particularly seriously - i doubt my PC would even load modern big graphics games and i've always played 'slow' games mainly (civilisation, sim city, elite . . .) and usually only one at a time - i haven't played any other games since i installed BG

Welcome to Ironworks, Orbost!

Always good to see fellow aussie RPG fans around, particularly when they've played some of the golden oldies that I've grown to love over the years.

I actually still have my C64 and simply treasure the RPGs that were made for it. Goldbox AD&D series, The Bard's Tale series, The Ultima's, the first two Might and Magics...they're all still there whenever I need them. There's still a few I haven't completed yet, also!

I've only completed Baldur's Gate three times, once by itself and twice with Tales of the Swords Coast. Fighter, Bard, Druid were my class choices, so there's always the incentive to play again to try other classes for the protaginist which logically will often require a different party make-up.

Obviously there are those who have done it many many more times me often doing it solo, but I can honestly say that I'll probably be coming back to Baldur's Gate for as long as there is the sheer variety of NPCs and combinations thereof that I haven't tried out. Its like a quest in itself to absorb every single line, every minor sub-quest not even relevent to the main plot, every witty little remark that the game has in it which just makes it feel bigger.
The fact that the overall experience seems different each time I've played it, makes it a richer epic indeed.

Anyhow mate, enjoy your adventures in Faerun!

Cheers,
Cerebrodragon

Well, for me I'd say it is the best game I have ever played (up there with the Warcraft series)

I love the sheer freedom (ever though this is obvioulsy beaten by the likes of Morrowind) and just everything about the game. There are lots of mods to try too, and the game is made even better with the likes of BGT installed. I first got the game about 5 years ago I think, and since then I have many fond memories of spending whole days adventuring the sword coast.

Question Mark

1) My wife just got a new computer, so I restored mine to factory default and now have an unspoiled installation of BG.

2) I recently had to buy BG2 after discovering that one disc was physically cracked, so now I can continue my game after BG.

3) It is a very well-designed game; the replayability and continued devotion proves it. I still play Fallout2. Heck, I still play Bard's Tale!
