I loved the X-men movie--saw it today. I have never read the comics, so I have some questions.
1. Is Nightcralwer German in the comics? 2. Is Nightcrawler religious in the comics?

Yes on both counts, from what I recall.

1. Yes. Bavaria, I think.
2. Yes. In the comic he left the team at one point to study in a seminary. He returned to the team recently although it is not known if he completed his studies or not. Unlike his lame movie counterpart he does not tattoo himself with wierd symbols nor say prayers at the most inoppurtune of times. |

Thanks, I just wondered. I really thought this movie was better than the first one.

When the (at the time) "new" X-Men were introduced in the comics, they were pretty international-- Nightcrawler from Germany, Colossus from Russia, Storm from Africa, etc.
Nightcrawler was pretty religious in the comic. When the Beyonder showed up in Secret Wars II, Kurt was really distressed, because he was so powerful and he wondered how such a being could be allowed to exist if God was real. It was quite a crisis of faith for him. But Kurt winds up in a romantic relationship with a witch... Go figure.

Personally, I liked the "angelic symbols" and I don't remember Nightcrawler saying any prayers at an inopportune time. I thought the entire aspect of his faith was handled quite well.
The one thing I did miss seeing (but hope will show up in X3) are Kurt's other powers - most significantly - his ability to walk on walls like Spiderman. The rescue of Rogue was the perfect place to at least "mention" this power. How else could he explain not getting sucked right back out the hole again since they were just laying on the floor. I would like to have seen him covering Rogue while holding on to the floor of the plane and saying something like "Don't worry, we aren't going anywhere this time". BTW Reeka, Nightcrawler and Wolverine were very good friends in the comic - even though Logan is basically an atheist. Nightcrawler was always try to "soften" Wolverine wilder side. Wolverine felt like Nightcrawler's "faith" was a waste of time, but he could not deny how well it served Nightcrawler in dealing with the situations they often found themselves in.

1) When the X-Jet is hit by a missile and is in danger of crashing. A prayer in such circumstances sounds like a good idea to me. 2) After Jean's death. A prayer to announce her passage is practically de rigeur. Leave the poor blue guy alone!
There were actually a couple more times. 1) He is praying when the Professor finally "locks" onto his position. Given his Christian faith and horror he feels about not being able to stop himself from attacking the President...this is very appropriate. He is saying a prayer of repentence. 2) In the plane, he is praying (or saying a rosary - since he appears to be Catholic) when Storm comes back to talk to him. This is before the plane gets hit with the missile. 3) He also says a prayer while he is trying to teleport himself and Storm into Cerebro 2. Since he does not know his destination - there is a chance he could end up inside a wall or could have come in way at the top of the room (with a long fall ahead of them). To teleport "blind" required an act of faith, so he is calling on God to guide him. Again, very appropriate given his Christian faith.
