Belle and I saw K-19 this weekend. We both thought the movie was really good: tense drama and wonderful characterizations from Mr. Ford and Mr. Neeson.

However, upon leaving the theater the couple behind us were saying to themselves, "What was that movie about? I didn't get it. There wasn't enough action. I didn't like it."

Just why do people go to the movies? Sometimes we go for an action film just out of pure enjoyment, but primarily we go because we are interested in a movie as a story being told on the big screen. Belle didn't think she'd like Crouching Tiger, but she did once she got started; likewise, I didn't think I'd like Moulin Rouge, but I did once I got started.
Do people just miss the point of most movies, or what? Are they so ruined by television that they can't concentrate on a story line that has more depth than "who is going to the prom with her?" or "lock 'n load--we've got monsters to kill!"?

Why do you go to movies? What do you go to see?

Typically I go to a movie because I believe that there's something to be gained by seeing it on "the big screen". If the movie is of the cerebral or dramatic variety, I typically wait and watch the dvd. If a good part of the appeal of the movie is in the visuals (Matrix, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Moulin Rouge, etc...) then I try to see it in the theater.

The thrill of seeing it on a humongous screen (you'd never have THAT size in your house ) and the enjoyment of it. Also, for the noise . And all movies are better on the big screen!

I go to movies to get away from the real world for a little while and get completely immersed in fantastic stories. My favs over the last few years have been Sleepy Ho,llow, The Cell, Gladiator, Memento, and Lord of the Rings. Its a great escape from traffic, noise and John Q. Public...as long as John Q keeps his mouth shut in the cinema and leaves the crying baby with a sitter LOL! I do agree with Thoran, that some movies just have more appeal on the big screen.
It is also one of the two places where I get a whole tub of popcorn and a big bag of M&M's at the same time (the other place is here at home but that requires going out for a movie and having popcorn and M&M's in the cupboard already because I am not about to go to our local grocery store when my main objective is to relax and enjoy!)

I try to go to the movies once every couple of weeks. During some parts of the year, there are just no attractive movies for me, so I don't bother. Then at other times, I might go twice in a week, when there are lots of great things out.

I know what you mean though Azred. The amount of times I've gone to the movies, to find people just whinging about how they don't get it, or plainly are not watching the movie, it makes me really mad!

Even when I went to see Lord of the Rings at the premiere, there was a guy sitting near me that was continually saying how f#$%ing bad the movie was. He sat through the whole thing, and then when it finished, he stood up and said "well that's gonna be a big flop! I bet they don't even bother with the sequels!" The fact that he never gave the movie a chance shows me his lack of scope and imagination.

Anyways, I go to the movies for the thrill of escapism, and seeing some truly amazing spectacles take place before my eyes. You can have a surprisingly wide range of emotions on the way! When I go to the flicks, and I'm the only one there (which has happened a few times!), I don't think, "How Embarrassing! I'm such a loser!" I think "Excellent! Now I can experience this properly, without distraction! It's my world now!"

Avi.

When I attend a theater...it is because the movie I am going to go see has got to be seen in all it's glory and power...also because I do not want to wait until the DVD comes out...that takes too long. I have a 13" TV and the speaker on it is a damn .5" or something....I can't hea anything! When I wanna see The Two Towers, for example...I want to hear the music and the action blasting loud and the pictures big enough not to let you miss anything!
It is also fun to go out side of the home, and attend a movie.

The popcorn is pretty good too.

I rarely go to the theaters unless there's cool effects involved...
now I depend on VHS or DVDS that comes with closed-captioned
