(getting on my soapbox)
I think *thief* characters should not be higher than chaotic good, if even that. What does IW land think about this?

Anyway, thief behavior, in general, is antisocial, so I don't think any variety of thief should be able to be of Good alignment(maybe CG).

what about lawful neutral thieves?
Anyway, in sed they were nicely called rogues not thiefes. and in their descriptions it was that they can be assassins, diplomats, scouts.... a LG "thief" is okay. He could learn the ability to open locks to help him in dungeons, whre he fights evil. Skills themselves are not good or evil, it depends how you use them. Similarly killing is generally "evil". Does it mean all fighters who kill should be evil? [ 12-10-2004, 04:43 PM: Message edited by: ZFR ]

I don't think thieves should be restricted from any alignments.

Hm... You raise interesting questions. The answers are also interesting. I don't think there should be alignment restrictions... There are people out there who might not roleplay those alignments, but then you take characters mentioned above (Immy and Robin Hood are very good examples, and I wouldn't have thought of Locke, nice one) and see well-played good-aligned thieves. What I *don't* approve of are people who claim their backstabbing, shoplifting, pick-pocketing thieves are Neutral Good. NG characters probably wouldn't think the ends justify the means.

I, personally, would bar Thieves from all Lawful alignments, for obvious reasons. Thieves are by nature inclined against the law. They can still be Neutral on the Law/Chaos axis, however, if they strictly adhere to the policies of their organization. Renal Bloodscalp, for example, is Neutral Evil not only because he's out for all her can get, but also because he's fiercely loyal to an Evil group, the Shadow Thieves.
The Good/Evil axis is determined by who you prefer to Backstab / steal from. [CAVEAT:] I have designed a recruitable NPC Thief who is Lawful Good, however. He's a Bounty Hunter who works for the Amnish law enforcement community, and aids in apprehending criminals. He knows Keldorn rather well, having been on missions with him before. His equipment includes a nonremovable Amulet that keeps his Pick Pockets score stuck at 0%, permanently. [ 12-11-2004, 03:59 PM: Message edited by: SixOfSpades ]
