<font color="white">I have read some more, and discovered that many were lost in the fall of Myth Drannor, among other reasons. That would explain how he may have come across one, but I thought they only chose good aligned people. Does the novel on BG mention anything about this?</font>

No, moonblades are hereditary weapons and need to be wielded by one who is of the bloodline of the sword's original wielder. They can't be "found".

Maybe he was an only son and last of his line?
