Two series of books that I quite liked were :

1) The Fionovar Tapestry - by Guy Gavriel Kay - excellent fantasy tal, great characterisation, and quite a few surprises and plot twists

2) is a Sci Fi series by M.K.Wren - forget the overall title of the series, but the books were Sword of the Lamb, Shadow of the Swan, and House of the Wolf. It was a futuristic series, that funnily enough, had Australia as the leading centre of culture on the planet (not that that had anything to do with the story which ranged between planets mostly - I guessed the author felt that we in Oz must have survived the nuclear fallout from the WW3 holocaust better than most ). I would love to be able to get copies of those books, but they were out of print a long long time ago.

So, any thoughts, anyone read these?

I liked the Fionavar Tapestry a lot , but its noas good as the Sarantium books in my opinion. I felt that he was heavily influenced by his work with Christopher Tolkien when writing the tapestry and the evidence can be seen in his prose.

You're right about the Sarantium books being good - I took the change to be more of a writer maturing into his own style. Ireland huh - will be over there in September - you have great golf courses, bars and music (will be 3rd visit in 5 years).

We couldn't afford not to have decent Bars here given that they're our biggest export . The golf courses are excellent sometimes the weather we have here can put a dampener on things though.

Don't forget to to to Barnes & Noble in New York, Davros. It's HUGE and literally contains millions of books. Ginormous fantasy/sci-fi section. It might be downtown Fifth Avenue but don't quote me - haven't been to New York for a couple of years.

OK, taking notes Memmie - 5th Avenue - near any standout landmark that an Aussie might know?

Yes, great trilogy! I really enjoyed it, but have not re-read it for a loooong
time!
Don't know the other one.
I've only just started posting in this forum, so forgive me if I ask previously asked questions:
Does anyone here read Robin Hobb? GREAT writer, IMHO!

I think it's near 14th and 5th but I'd have to check on you. It's near a recognizable building - whose name I can't remember!

My sister's from New York, when she gets home I'll ask her. It's really close to Filene's Basement, also on 5th Ave I think.

That's a definite YES to the Robin Hobb question Flojtsdale - haven't read the Liveship series yet (Book one is piled with the other "To read" books on the kitchen table at the moment). The first trilogy though, the Assassin books - simply fantastic. Re-read them about 3 months ago. It's a dark style, sort of brooding, but a great story with depth, and some really classic lines. As he said, How do you describe the colour Blue, some things must be experienced - this series is one of them.

Yeah! I have a real liking for books where the hero/ine starts off as a child because you get to watch the developement not only of plot but of personality, and there is a great sense of time passing which gives a feeling of reality and involvement you don't get in many novels.
I have started the Liveship series - have read 1 and a half so far. Good - but not as good as the Assassin series, I think, though my eldest daughter thinks they are even better!
