Alrighty, I was thinking of starting my first solo game, and I was wondering if you guys have any advice. I was thinking of doing Fighter/Mage. Any thoughts? Oh, and I'm planning on taking this guy through SoA/ToB as well, so bear that in mind.

Take a multi-classed fighter/mage/thief elf or half-elf. Stock up on potions and make sure that you know the game well. If this is your 1st or 2nd time through the game, then I suggest that you don't solo through yet...unless you know where the traps are and how to deal with fights with just 1 character.

anything 'can' be soloed and fighter/mage is solid - you can go through most of BG1 with a longbow pretty much
fighter/mage/thief is a touch stronger (and the first solo, i finished BG1 with) if only for the backstab which is a powerful help for the soloer - they won't be quite as godly in the higher ToB levels though withough the mage HLAs |

I don't know how you can solo a game with such a low xp cap. Youll be maxed in no time, and then what? Mabye I just suck at this game (I barely beat it with a full party of lvl 7s) but I just don't think itll work.

I have soloed a few times with a halfling fighter/thief and I really enjoy it. Granted you have to carry a boatload of potions and I don't even want to go into how many times it took me to get across the chessboard in Durlag's tower but it is a blast each time I do it.
