Chapter 2 question

I'm playing in chapter 2. I've recovered three of the books for the magic shop woman in Port Llast. When I go through the portal, there is a bookcase by the chest, with three scrolls. One scroll lists a recipe of a fire beetle stomach and a quartz stone. I put those things in the chest, and nothing happens. What am I supposed to do next? It's supposed to make a fireball. Is that an item that casts fireball, a scroll, or does it teach me the spell? How do I activate it?

Also, is there no magical smithy like in chapter 1? It seems that the only items available are different spells. I'd rather have some decent equipment, since my +1 great sword with added fire damage is getting kind of old.

That magic shop is the only magic smithy type merchant in act 2. The one in chapter 1 was mostly for weapons and armor, which are mostly useless to casters, so they put a shop for casters in. what you need to do is put the ingredients into the chest, then cast the appropriate spell on the chest per each recipie.
