I have played BG through twice, hitting the XP cap the second time round before getting to BG city.

Therefore, I am contemplating using an experience cap remover (GruntWare) to see if I can gain more levels with the cap off, and what effect this will have on the game.

However, I am unsure of what this patch does - does it permanently remove the XP cap from the BG game, or can one reinstate the XP cap if one wants to play another game with the XP cap back on ?

And : how safe is it to use this patch - any known side effects ?

When you finish BG with XP cap remover installed and you import your char from BG to SoA his XP will be reset to default of 161,000 XP.

I assume that you're playing straight BG1 (without ToSC), because with ToSC installed, you don't need a cap remover--by the time you hit the ToSC EXP cap of 161,000, you're so close to the end of the game anyway that you won't even care.

But, as you say, in straight BG1 you can hit the cap when you're only about 60% of the way through the game. Cap removers rule!

I, personally, didn't notice any negative side effects when I was using a cap remover. Others may post differing experiences, though. After installing the remover, all subsequent games will have no EXP cap: To put it back on, you'll have to delete & reinstall the game.

Note, however, that if you export your character into BG2, all experience gained beyond the EXP cap will be taken from you automatically. And, strangely, I could find *NO* cap remover that worked with ToSC installed.

Flaming Fist's post is basically correct. For more precise info, go here:

and scroll down to the table that's right below Garrick's picture, and right above Dynaheir's.

grunt ware worked fine for me, and yes, you can remove it at any time. to remove do the same as you did when installing it.

Thanks to all of you for your feedback !

As I am playing "straight" BG1, I guess the right thing to do in order to increase the XP cap would be to get ToSC.

However, in the back of the woods where I'm staying, I can't get hold of the ToSC CD. Therefore, I have installed the XP cap disabler (the XP cap remover did not want to work, something about "wrong version of program").

The XP cap disabler works like a bomb. What a pleasure to watch the extra experience my characters are earning - it seemed so pointless finishing all the remaining quests, being stuck on the 89k limit.

Hopefully my characters will fare better in the final battle with the extra level they can now possibly gain (I did it with the XP cap on, but found it quite tough).

Since I do not plan to progress to BG2/SoA any time soon, I am not worried about losing any experience points above 161,000.
