Do the Flaming Fist guys in Nashkel accost you in Chapter 7 like they do in Baldur's Gate? I'd like to rest there on my way down to the Durlag's Tower sector, but we could camp out if they're on the lookout for us there, as well. Now I know how David Janssen* felt.

There are no FF soldiers in Nashkel, as it is a part of a different nation called Amn. The Amnish soldiers don't really care about the things you may have done across the border, so it should be safe to rest.

Which implies that Beregost is under the rule of Baldur's Gate.

Somewhere between Beregost and Nashkel is the line that separates Amn from the north. Although Beregost is in the same 'state' as Baldur's Gate, you won't be bothered by any Flamist Fist enforcers in the town. Anyway, I know this is none of my business, but why don't you just go from Baldur's Gate to Durlag's Tower in one go? Sure you might get ambushed once or twice, and you'll need to rest once you get to the tower, but I still think it's quicker and easier than stopping in Beregost or Nashkel first. Or maybe I'm just stupid

What puzzles me is that the boundary between the Sword Coast and Amn doesn't seem to follow a natural border: One would expect that the dividing line between the two nations would be the Cloudpeak Mountains, but no! Nashkel is North of the Cloudpeaks, and yet part of Amn. Beats me.
Beregost is not under the rule of Baldur's Gate, it has its own sovereignity and its own Mayor. There are Flaming Fist there, but the Fist are a mercenary police organization for the entire Sword Coast, who just happen to be based in BG City. Duke Eltan was elected Grand Duke because he was the leader of the Fist--not vice versa.

could be lotsa reasons why nashkel was in amn not Baldur's Gate
I would say the two most likely are if amn and baldur's gate had a war and captured Nashkel(for the mine) or if Baldur's gate didn't resources to govern farther than just past Beregost than it would natrually become part of next nation

OK. I guess I was off-base, but the game gave me the impression that the nation of Amn was beyond the boundaries of the Sword Coast world map, that if you're ever in Amn, it's in one or more of the sequel games, that Baldur's Gate is the capital city of the Sword Coast region, and that the presence of Amnish soldiers in Nashkel is just indicative of the rising tensions between Amn and Baldur's Gate. Whatever. To answer Arledrian, I know I could make a straighter shot of our trek down to Durlag's Tower, but I thought it would be nice to revisit Beregost and Nashkel on the way down. I like these towns more than Baldur's Gate, and there's the lure of a nice inn rest after a round of drinks, and I thought I might see if Volo's still there to talk to---I gave him the cold shoulder when first we met, since I figured he'd be long-winded, it'd be stuff I already knew, and I was anxious to make some headway. Never let it be said that I'm not roleplaying, because I am, and because the make-believe aspect of games like this is very dear to my heart.

Baldur's Gate is a city state, not a nation, it might claim the nerby farmlands, but that's about it.
