I read in a different web site about baldurs gate that if you read enough books that are all over the game that your lore will go up. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Sort of yes, sort of no.
Reading regular books does NOT improve your characters lore ability, it improves YOUR lore ability. Though the four magical tomes that modify intelligence and wisdom (plus the machine of lum the mad and final challenges among others) DO affect lore. Simply because lore is calculated from your Wisdom and Intelligence, as well as from your class. Hope it helps.

What I think you want is this: In a book shelf on the top floor of Ramazith's Tower in BG (the big blue one close to the Duchal Palace) is a tome that when identified will permanently raise your intelligence by 1 point. There is one such tome for each ability, but 3 for wisdom. They are at:
1. Being held by a Priest in the Lady's Temple in BG.(Wisdom) 2. In Durlag's Tower(TotSC required)(wisdom) 3. I forget (so sorry)(wisdom) 4.In a cave guarded by flesh golems on the lighthouse map.(constitution) 5. In a cave at the gnoll stronghold(charisma) 6. In a barrel at the thieves guild in BG(dexterity) 7.In the Candlekeep Catacombs (ch.6) (strength) Hope this helps! -Brainless One |

Shoemacker, I've heard the same thing about the generic history books. To be honest, I've read every history book I've come across and my lore didn't raise a point. Your best bet for lore is a bard (who gets ten points of lore per level up), or a thief or a mage (who get four points). Everyone else just gets one per level up. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but wisdom affects the lore bonus, multiclassed thieves and magi still get the full lore bonus, and dual-classed thieves or magi get the bonus points only when they're leveling that half. Unless the character has lore in the 50s, you're not going to be able to identify much. In my TotSC party, I have a character with 39 lore. She can identify +1 items, protection scrolls, and the occasional low-level spell without an ID spell.

Corrections:
Bards do get 10 Lore per level, but Mages & Thieves only get 3 Lore per level, not 4. Multiclassed characters have a separate Lore value for each class; the higher of the two is the character's effective Lore score. Thus, a Multiclassed Fighter/Thief will have a Lore of: (Thief level * 3) + modifiers from INT and WIS. I find that the most difficult items to Identify are the Cursed items--those seem to require a Lore of about 100 or so.

Hmm - might be a silly question, but how do you identify with your lore? Do you get another option in the identify menu (besides scroll and spell)?

Nope. You just right-click on the item to be identified. If your lore is sufficient, it will be succesfully identified there and then. If not, the item shows the unidentified description as normal.
