HI, first time playing through this game, am lvls 3 through 5 and i havent been able to upgrade my stat points at all. this is annoying because in the mission pack saved game, 2 of the characters are able to get their strength to like 18/90 or something. So i assume you can only upgrade the stat points that have the / in them. IU have one of these characters yet his strength has not changed since i got him. any help?

Your stats don't go up through normal adventuring or when you reach a new level. So don't be surprised that they're staying at their base values. They change very rarely...
* * * * * SPOILER * * * * * Some items will raise your ability scores, either permanently, or temporarily. In this instance, any one of your stats can be raised, not just your strength (ie. the score which has the dash in it). It just depends on the item itself. There isn't any one item that raises your scores either, it can be anything from a helmet to a suit of armour. Just look around and explore thoroughly, and you'll see what I mean Welcome to the forum, by the way

You basically set your stats at the begining when you create your character.
On creation of your charater there are + - signs next to each stat so you can adjust them. You can also do rerolls to see if you can get better states. To get strength with the 18/90 number you just keep hitting the + sign until you can't spend any more stat points, or have run out of points to spend. A roll will determine the maximum strenth you can have between 18 and 19. For example if you are playing a fighter you will probaly want to your strengh as high as possible but you can lower your intelligence to a low number unless you are dueling or multi classing. Through out the game you may find tombs that can increase your stats. If you are really new to the game go to this site and read at least chapter 6 and maybe 1 through 5 if you wish to take the time. It is a great site for beginers, contains no spoilers, and is just a great all round resoucre for the game. http://www.geocities.com/sixospades/bg/contents.htm After reading this you may actually feel like starting over depending on your stats for your role. I will say that there are items that you may be able to find in the game that will boost your stats up like 18 or 19 as long as you are wearing the item. Sorry to hear that you are leaving the game, but you HAVE to use 'tons' of hours on BG to complete. But if you get hooked as I am, you are willing to sacrifice those hours.
And by the way: If you pick up some NPCs so you got a party like this (don't have to be excactly as this. A lot of variations are possible): Two fighters/rangers/paladins as your frontline melee guys One cleric to heal your party One thief to open locks/find traps and shoot with a bow from the distance Two mages with hard hitting spells you are very well running for a start. If your main character is a melee guy, it would be a good idea to have high (18/XX) Strength, Con and Dex. You can easily survive eventhough your stats are not optimal (there are some good NPCs in the game to help you (BTW an NPC is a non player character. It is the 'people' you meet in the game, that want to join your party. Imoen - and she is a very good NPC - was probably the first you met)). And there are always save and reload Insane PS: My only problem with the game right now is that with the limited free time I have, I do not play as much as I wanted to.
