I got to thinking about uses for Charm spells the other day and was wondering if you guys make use of them. The basic Charm Person spell is ok against weak enemies but soon everyone saves against it. Dire Charm is much stronger so I use this quite often. As for the Algernon's Cloak, that is so powerful that it almost amounts to cheating and I only use it for special occasions. What got me started on this was my solo Bard - he needs all the help he can get and using Charm is a good way of improving the odds. This recent encounter was a bit of fun .......

My solo Bard didn't fancy his chances against Greywolf, so I used the Charm Cloak on him and tried to use Greywolf as cannon fodder - trouble was he was much too powerful for the enemies on that map. Eventually I came across a single grey wolf and sent Greywolf to tackle it with his bare hands. Still he was winning easily, so I had to get him to stand around and let the wolf take bites out of him (if it could). Finally I weakened Greywolf to the point where I could quickly finish him off (with an arrow in the back) and collect the XP and his nice sword, but what a struggle it was to get rid of him.

Anyway what is your favourite use for Charm, or if you like, your best over-use of it?

Is "charm animal" counted because if it is there are no better allies than have bears as your friends to deal with all those bandit and hobgoblin archers that you meet. Send in the charmed bears and fire arrows from a distance.

You know Ashen, that annoying Nobleman who insults you by the Beregost Temple? Well, happily, there's a lot of hostile critters on that map, so I always.....ah....."convince" Ashen to help me fight them. Such bravery is rare among members of the upper class. Farewell, Ashen, we shall never forget you....until we want to, of course.

I also like charming the Cat at the Nashkel Mines and have it attack the Rats, but unfortunately it can't kill them, as the designers didn't give it a weapon.

The designers obviously had it declawed. I found out last night that the ones in BG2 however are not declawed and will attack the rats without being charmed.
Very nice realism!!

Charm bears! That's a good idea. Why haven't I done that?? I just kill them for some XP. Gotta use charm.

Are there any limits on using Algernon's cloak? Can it only be used a fixed number of times (ie. charges) or can it only be used a fixed number of times each day?

I mostly use the cloak to 'charm back' one of my party members, that has been charmed by an enemy (ex. dire charmed by a Sirene).

Well, there was that time when the charmed chicken saved my life. She wasn't really charmed as it turned out, but we had a good meal...

I've got the story somewhere on the other computer, I'll see if I can find it.

I made an half-elven enchanter. It's very nice and challenging, you have access to very very few damage dealing spells, so you have to change tactics accordingly.

I use charm-person a lot, at low levels it's very very useful. When many enemies jump me i always charm one or two (works on kobolds, hobgoblins, bandits, gnolls, so at low level in BG1 it's perfect). I just love that spell

Though i don't know if it is useful at higher levels and/or in BG2. This is the first time i make a mage (enchanter in this case) and I want to take her (female char fits better for an ench) from BG1 all the way to ToB. She is actually only level 4.

What i really would like to know is : do CHARISMA has anything to do with the charm line of spells ? I mean, with a higher charisma will my charm be less-resisted ? If anyone knows please feel free to spoil me
