What do they do? I invoked one once and it increased one of my stats by one. Are the effects completely random? Is it worth paying $625 to identify if I have three?

i'd work on the artifacts skill so knowledge can be free. the ahnks effect is not random. what kind of ahnk you find is random. you should use them to improve your characters as you see fit.
one idea is to hang on to them until your stats can't go up anymore, then use them to max-out to 24. the training in the guild will say you can no longer train after 18. click on it anyway and i think you will get a surprise. |

The ankhs are not random...you can see what it will increase by saving your game and then invoking it...then reload your saved game and give it to whomever you want to have that stat raised prior to getting the ID Item skill up to a level it can tell what they are.
