Every time I see a post about Scanthril and his band of assassins, someone is always planning on snuffing him, or someone says how anoying he is! Why is this? Am I missing something terribly, and obviously, offensive about these little furry business men? What it all boils down to, is why do YOU hate these guys?
hmmmmmmm...maybe I should start a scanthril releif fund... |

He's evil. It is because of him that Gareth the Village Elder was killed.

Nah, Grue Morde killed Gareth. As for the ratling scoundrels, they are annoying, Scanthril doesn't pay on delivery but tries to send you off to the boogres to collect your "payment", they got sass to the nth degree, and every one of them blames you for the rat pie you delivered to Rethpian ("chit chit, ya pays for pies!").

I do not mean the enemy ratlings, but Scanthril and his band. The ones that never attack you, the ones that give you another exciting quest to go on, and the ones that let your aspiring Ninja become a dreaded assassin!

If you talk to Scanthril long enough, you find out that:
A) He's responsible for killing Gorthius, the honorable thief, near Valeia B) He's responsible for sanctioning Gareth's assassination (although it's Grue Morde that carries out the deed) C) He's in league with the Snake Temple (he's Elyssia's "thug"; in fact, it is she who has ordered Gorthius and Gareth's assassinations through him and his cronies) D) He's planning to "whack" Freyedies, the Stout King E) On top of all that, he's a bully and a miserable coward (ask him about Shurugeon ruins for a good laugh) F) "Why the poor rats"? Why not ask "Why poor Al Capone" or "Why poor Hitler"? -Sazerac |

No prob! My characters are inveterate gossips. They yack and yack with every NPC until all the keywords are exhausted, then they'll cast "Mind Leech" and see if they can get more keywords out of them. One time they started talking with one of the NPC's (Erzebette, I think) in the middle of the night, and when they finished, dawn was breaking...hey, it's a good way to make the PM go faster!
I just caught the "Scanthril Relief Fund" reference...what a hoot! -Saz |

Just remembered one more Scanthrilism...he refers to the stouts as "short, fat, dumb people." My two dwarven characters had to be held back forcibly from disemboweling him so that my bard could finish the Assassin quest, LOL!

But even though they are murderers for hire, calling them evil for doing this is impossible without implementing yourself in the business of being "evil". Anyone who killed Raskalion in the Stout Mines has done EXACTLY the same thing as these rats. They assassinate people for their own benefits (gold, or cheese, or however they are payed!) and you assassinate Raskalion (to advance a character to an Assassin), so you are both commiting murder for your own selfish gain... And until you are ready to admit that you are just as evil as these very enthusiastic business rats, lay off 'em!

Good point...except that Raskallion isn't exactly the "injured innocent" either. Freyedies wants you to kill him as well. No one seems to be crying over his demise. Now if it was Erzebette or Hephaestus that you were to "off", well then... I guess it comes down to what one can "live with" in the game, eh?
