when near the fireball trap that you need to walk through (its timed and found in durlags tower lower levels) i found it can act as a superb healing device (or any fire attack i would assume) cast the high level protection against fire then just wade in and bask in the glory you will gain -5 -6 -9 etc damage to your char and he screams like a girl as he takes the hit, but then you realise due to negatives not being catered for correctly that hes actually increasing his health by those points so it acts like a hp regen, beautiful

Not a bug. higher than 100% resistance of anything will mean you heal from that damage. Even physical damage although its not possible within BG1 to resist physical that much.

Pretty handy, but you do need some heavy-damage traps to make the most of it.

of course its a bug , you think the designers meant for people to get massive healing through resistance? resistance simply means you should ignore damage effects, not take negative damage which spills over to healing, trust me thats a bug

Nope, it's actually not a bug.....ANY resistance (physical, elemental, magic damage), if you can crank it over 100%, will heal you. The setup is exactly the same in BG2, and if it was a bug, you can be sure they (or Kevin Dorner) would have fixed it.

Some creatures have greater than 100% resistance right from the get-go: I believe electrical damage will heal the Doomsayer.

No its not.

It may be a bug that the player can get over 100% resistance, but it is not a bug that getting over 100% resistance heals targets. There are monsters in BG and BGII that use this ability correctly.

Without memorizing the monster manual is there any way of telling which monsters have this interesting capability so you don't make them harder to kill then they actually are?

Watch the combat window. If you see something taking negative damage, it's time to change tactics--quickly. And remember it for next time.

monsters etc have natural resistance at maximum and can use it to heal themselves like you see in many films or star trek normally i think, "eat phaser blob thing, oh no its getting stronger and bigger now", players can duplicate it to an extent but i think its a bug that they can use it to heal themselves as players were never meant to be able to do that, 100 percent of anything doesnt happen in ad&d except in special circumstances (for the party) doesnt happen in any roleplaying games, 95 percent is normally the best attainable, there always has to be a chance to fail, thats why its a bug...

Its up to the DM to set the maximum available. Plus most ad&d campaigns dont run long enough to build a level 40 character with equipment Helm himself would drool over. So 100% resistance is difficult, but not impossible to obtain.
