Hello all. I'm rather new to 3rd edition rules and I had a couple of questions. Unfortunately I can't remember most of them right now, so I'll go with the one I can.
Is there any advantage, say, to choosing a scimitar in this game? It used to be that they had a nice speed factor but I don't see anything in the manual or game to suggest this is still true. And why is a scimitar a "martial weapon", while a bastard sword is "exotic"? Is there any point in pursuing a bastard sword since no one starts with the initial feat? And does it seem to anybody that 3E rules take some of the individuality or flavour out of the weapons? I'm not complaining, mind, just asking if anybody feels this way.

Weapons do have differences. Example - A scimitar does less damage, but causes more critical hits at 2X damage. (18/19/20) A longsword does more damage (1-8), but less of a critical hit range (19/20). A battle axe does the same damage as a longsword, but only gets a critical hit on a 20. BUT, it does TRIPLE damage, not double damage.
Rapiers (not implimented) are like scimitars, but they can used with the "Weapon finesse" feat to use dexterity as the attack modifier. Shortswords can be used as "off hand" weapons without the size penalty for Large or bigger weapons.

I think the bastard sword does the most base damage one-handed in the game, so that's why it might be tempting and worth the extra feat.

As for the bastard sword it's not really a exotic weapon per se. (not like say dwarven
urghosh) it's only exotic if you want to wield it one handed as a medium size char. I don't think this is implemented in IWDII though. In a P&P game you could use a bastard sword two handed as a martial weapon. Rawel |
