I've got my myself (Catch copy name is "The One"), Imoen, Montaron, Xzar, and the 2 ppl from the Friendly arm Inn in my party, and after I finish the Nashkel mines quest, I plan to add either that wizard guy you meet in Nashkel and/or the Big guy with the sword and a critter on his shoulder...but who should I get rid of? I was sorta thinkin' that the lady from the friendly arm inn seems kinda weak....Imoen is weak but she IS a thief...should i keep her for now until I possibly find a better theif?

I'm Neutral (middle of the road = more options...I guess
I'm a Ranger (hey, according to one page they have the highest stats base of any class so sounded good)

So I need some mages and a thief or two...

well if you get minsc your forced into searching for dynhiera(a mage) montaron and xzar wont get along very well with anybody but edwin.(they are all evil) Jahiera is dual classed so she progresses slowly but is quite powerful eventually. Plus she's married to Khallid so i'm not sure if you can split them.
I would suggest taking minsc, imoen, khallid, jaheria and edwin and then dumping edwin for dyneria This is assuming you want to be fairly noble. This would give you one frigging strong melee party w/ 4 fighters (you, khallid, minsc, and jahiera dual classed) U need somebody to heal (Jahiera will fill that role although in a diminished capacity again because of the dual class) I would recommend lotsa potions and resting a long time.

You may want to consider a cleric. There is Branwen at the Naskel Carnival and Viconia in the Peldvale forest.

Err...don't you have to have a good alingment to be a Ranger?

Don't forget Ajantis, he rocks! He is a paladin on the southern road of a farm that is northeast of the friendly arm inn. If you try and get him watch out, getting way laid by bandits on a low level is almost certain death.

As a ranger you must be aligned as good. Since you mention you are neutral then it means you are neutral good in alignment which means Xzar and Monteron will eventually clash BIG TIME with your good aligned characters, most likely on the level that someone will wind up dead. Here is another thing to consider. Xzar and Monteron are a pair. Kahlid and Jaheira are a pair. Dismiss one and the other one will leave. If you do want to keep one but get rid of the other there always is the option of sending in the one you want to remove into combat without armor or weapons. After he/she dies then reform your party. The partner will stay.

Minsc is immensly strong with an 18/93 strength and the woman he wants you to rescue, Dynaheir is the best mage in the game for good alinged parties. As has been posted, Branwen is a really good Cleric. For an excellent (and I do mean excellent)readout on the NPCs of the game without spoilers (other than where they can be found) I strongly suggest this web site: www.pottsland.com Don't let this title fool you. It is very good.

Well, Albromor covered your options pretty well. The wizard at the end of the Nashkell (Xan) is very weak, IMHO. He has a sword that gives him 50% Magic Resistance (freakishly strong for 1st level), but he isn't much good even with that.

Branwen is an excellent cleric, she just always wants to "jump into the action". Minsc is almost a "must have". Tragically, I killed him on my first trip through (didn't know any better). And his "witch" - Dynaheir - is the best mage PERIOD, IMHO - especially if you find a Ring of Wizardry for her. She is a walking arsenal of damage spells.

Another character I liked on my first trip through was Garrick, the bard. You'll meet him in the town before you get to the mines. He has some thieving abilities and some spellcasting abilities and is GREAT at Identifying items. He will make an acceptable spellcaster until you find Dynaheir, and will have better combat abilities than Xan.

Ajantis is also good, but you might want to wait just a bit before seeking him out. In addition to being near the Bandit Hideout, he also happens to be in an area infested with nasty-buggers known as Ankhegs. These things are VERY TOUGH because they can spit acid at you and are darn good at it. But they're worth a LOAD of experience points when you kill them.

Enjoy.

I agree with you 100% Ceric concerning Dynaheir. She was so well balanced as an NPC. Never grated on ones nerves and if you ever got the chance to hear the dialogue between her and Minsc concerning his hamster it is down right hilarious. Even she doesn't get it!

People will argue that Edwin is the best and in certain facts he is skill wise BUT his attitude stinks so much that I want to reach in through the screen and choke the life out of him.

Erg....someone put all these random suggestions into one neat package for me will ya?

Exactly WHERE in the carnival is Branwen? Looked on The Gate site and it said east of the marchant tents but I don't see anyone named her east of all those tents...

Should I keep Khalid? One website said he was a chicken, and I do remember him getting to about 1/2 HP and wanting to run suddenly (arg!).

How about edwin? I think I turned him down and he came to attack me in Nashkel (used that mirror image thing and then panic and horror and...JEEZ this guy is annoying!). Should I get him?
