Hello,
for the sake of not repeating ourselves, head over to the BG2:TOB forum and read the "Sendai's Secret Icewind Dale Dungeon Quest" topic.

First, by all means get IWD along with the expansion Heart of Winter. Then download the FREE add-on "Trials of the Luremaster." It is a hack & slash dungeon crawl, but a FUN dungeon crawl!!! It is linear in plot, but the graphics are good and the soundtrack is the best ever. It is cheap now and the thing I really liked about the game is that you could create a party of 6 the way you always dreamed of. So by all means go for it. IWD2, NWN and others will still be here when you finish. By the way, you cannot import characters from the BG series into IWD and vice-versa.

The biggest difference between IWD and BG2 is that the former lacks any npcs which can join your party and no npc related subquests. Other than that, the two games are fairly similiar in terms of mechanics. Some people will argue that IWD is more linear than BG2. If you disregard the many side quests in BG2, it too is very linear.
Personally I think the graphics and sound in IWD are far superior to BG2.

thanks very much, but u said in IWD u cant get npcs to join your party, so does that mean u have to make one yourself or the NPCs that you play with are the only ones you can play with and use?

In IWD, you create your entire party - up to six people. There are no npc's within the game that will join your group.

In BG2, you have the option to either create your entire party (if you are clever) or you can utilize the npc's you find within the game.

I forgot one BIG difference between the two games. In BG2, if your main character dies, the game is OVER (you can always reload from your last save of course). In IWD, there is no MAIN character. Each character is simply a part of the group and unless ALL of the characters die in IWD, you can continue playing.

Awesome! i didnt like that in bg2 how when my main char died the game ended. I think its gonna be cool to make my own party, u can give them scripts though right?

As far as scripts go, I believe you can. I prefer not using them and just pause a lot to coordinate the groups actions.
